Grand Slam is the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club free gift to all those that signed up for the Figure Subscription Service 2.0 and was sent in the final shipment. At first, we were disappointed that the Club released a character that already had a 25th style update even if it happens to be a free figure. While you should never complain about something that happens to be free, we wanted to be fair to the G.I. Joe Club and investigate why they chose Grand Slam over all the 100’s of other possibilities of character choices such as last years Black Out free figure exclusive.
When Hasbro first started the 25th Anniversary line, they did come out with a Grand Slam action figure in 2008 (Target Exclusive Night Spector vehicle/figure pack) that was based on the 1983 release with silver armor. However, this release with the red armor is based on the first release of Grand Slam from 1982 with red armor.
It seems that the club wanted to offer a vintage release with an accurate version 1 colors rather than offer an unreleased character in 25th Anniversary style. So depending on the type of collector you are, this is either a want or pass for you.
We wish to take this opportunity and thank the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club, Boss Fight Studio and Hasbro for a great 2.0 line-up. We hope to hear news about the Figure Subscription Service 3.0 line-up at JoeCon 2014
Availability: March 2014
Sculpt & Paint:
Grand Slam uses all the same mold as his 2008 release in the Target Exclusive Night Spector vehicle/figure set. The only difference between that figure and this one is the red armor over the silver armor. We believe that they both use the same color green uniform or something very close to it.
While none of the previous releases of Grand Slam included a missile launcher, this release of Grand Slam includes it. This missile launches is the same one that was released with Scrap Iron.
Standard for modern G.I. Joe action figures.
Missile launches, stand, 2x missiles, helmet/visor, rifle, binoculars, figure stand.
Depending on if you are a completists you are, this is either a want or a pass for you. However, we find there is nothing wrong with owning two of the same figure with different paint apps on the armor.
Grand Slam is an excellent figure.
