McFarlane Toys continues to do an incredible job with their The Walked Dead toyline. Series 5 based on the TV series includes Glenn, Maggie Greene, Charred Zombie, Tyreese and Merle Zombie. In our interview with McFarlane Toys at New York ToyFair 2014, we learned that playsets and more vehicles like Daryl Dixon with Chopper are likely down the road. This was incredibly exciting news and we hope to see the same detail and artistic approach into these playsets as the figures.

The actors for Glenn, Maggie, Tyreese and Merle were digitally scanned to create their likeness. This is the only way how companies should make toys based on TV shows and movies. McFarlane Toys knows how to do it right. Each figure has riffled clothing to create texture, and a lot of great detail.
Glenn – He comes with two heads, removable riot gear, machine gun, pistol, knife, and metal pipe. Glenn’s second head is beat up and bruised courtesy of Merle when Glenn and Maggie were captured by him and brought to Woodbury for interrogation. He has a holster for his pistol and storage for his knife on his pants. The riot gear is sometimes difficult to connect both the pegs into the holes on the side as they pop out rather easily. The metal pipe has blood painted on and it’s truly realistic how it came out.
Maggie – She comes with a machine gun, pistol and a knife. Her face is rather off from actress Lauren Cohen’s likeness. She has some blood on her chest, left arm and a holster for her pistol and knife.
Tyreese – He comes with a shotgun, hammer and Carl’s silenced pistol. In this day and age, it’s not wise to include a handgun with a child, so McFarlane Toys made that right call by giving it to Tyreese (or any adult character would do). He has a loop on his belt to store his hammer and two storage pouches.
Merle Zombie – Merle did not live the life of a hero or even the life of a good man, but he went out like one. He single handily took on The Governor’s men with a herd of Walkers in order to try to save the life of his brother, and the other members of the Atlanta group at the prison. While he did not succeed in killing The Governor, he did take down most of his men. The Governor had shot Merle into the chest and left him to turn. As his brother Daryl approaches, he finds he’s too late and his brother a zombie. This was a very sad moment in the show and McFarlane Toys managed to give him those sad eyes you saw in the TV show when he was a zombie.
The figure is the same one as previously released and does not come with accessories. Only a bloody shirt and knife.
Charred Zombie – He comes with a gas tank and a figure stand. His legs swivel at the hips but even with the stand there is only one way to display him. The legs have no knee or ankle articulation. The sculpt does have some great detail and texture. The shirt is made of rubber but cannot be removed. His right arm swivels upward and the left arm is attached to his body and has no articulation.
Overall:
This is an excellent set but it does need some improvements like a new head for Maggie, and more articulation for the Charred Walker.
Highly Recommended.
