Mattel’s new line of DC 6″ Total Heroes action figures this year with limited deco and reduced articulation doesn’t have the same appeal as DC Universe Classics or DC Infinite Earths. However, their Total Heroes Ultra line on Mattycollector is surprisingly rather good. So far, Mattel released Green Lantern Corps John Stewart/Tomar-Re/Green Man, and now Black Manta. With two more Ultra figures coming (Batman Beyond – Q3, and Firestorm – Q4), things are looking good for the DC line. Just as long as they continue to offer additional heads and accessories compared to the standard retail line.
Availability: June 2014
Sculpt & Paint:
Black Manta uses the basic body of other Total Heroes 6″ figures, and features a newly tooled helmet, armor, 2 heads, belts, and accessories. Black Manta’s mask fits over both scarred and unscarred heads with the tubing plugging into the back. He has storage pegs for both blades on his lower back. The scarred head is exceptionally detailed with three lines across his face like he was attacked by Cheetah or another opponent with a claw.
He is painted in black and grey, with some red on his chest and back.
Articulation:
Standard for 6″ Total Heroes.
Accessories:
2 Spears, 3 sets of hands, three heads (with helmet, without helmet, and extremely angry face with scarred eyes), removable armor and backpack, knife.
Overall:
While this line is certainly not for everyone, we think that the Ultra figures are worth picking up. Black Manta with three ways to display him is a perfect example of why this line could work even with all the cut backs compared to Infinite Earths.
Highly Recommended.
