SDCC 2014 Exclusive Marvel Legends The Thanos Imperative Box Set Review

SDCC 2014 Exclusive Marvel Legends The Thanos Imperative 01

Hasbro’s San Diego Comic-Con 2014 Marvel Legends exclusive this year is the Thanos Imperative box set which includes Gladiator of the Imperial Guard of the Shi’ar Empire, Black Bolt, Medusa, Star-Lord (Comic), and Blastaar. This set is based on the 6 issue story arc The Thanos Imperative and was published in 2010 by Marvel Comics. While we have not read this story, or much after Civil War for that matter, this set intrigues us into reading this using our newly purchased Marvel Unlimited membership.

For those that could not obtain this set at SDCC, Hasbro provided a limited stock on HasbroToyShop. Trying to purchase their exclusives either way has proven to be very time consuming as both require a lot of time, patience, and a bit of a headache. This year, HasbroToyShop did not put up the exclusives until Monday, August 4th 2014. Over 5 business days after SDCC, which is also a new record in how long it took them. We would like to see things improve such as telling customers when to expect the exclusives to be posted online, and at what time like some competitors offer.

Availability: July 2014

Sculpt:

Gladiator –  This is the first time a member of the Imperial Guard has gotten made into an action figure in Marvel Legends since Toybiz came out with the first wave in 2002. Gladiator has been on wish lists for years now and fans can finally own him, that’s if they can cough up enough change for this limited run convention exclusive. He features a newly sculpted head and cape. For reference purposes, we posed him using the Mattycollector flying figure stand. The body they chose to reuse from Sentry is perfect for Gladiator and we really like how he came out.

Black Bolt – Black Bolt gets a second updated release in Marvel Legends using a body sculpt previously used for Bucky Barns Captain America. He has a newly tooled head and rubber wings and comes with a shiny black and silver paint scheme. The wings are sculpted to his forearms and have a limited range of motion. The overall design of Black Bolt came out great and it’s good to see Hasbro updating older figures. However, we can’t help but feel that Black Bolt should have been a retail figure so a more of a B-list character from the storyline could have made an action figure debut.

Medusa – Medusa is the wife of Black Bolt and she also makes her Marvel Legends debut in this box set. She features a very nice lean body sculpt and painted in her modern costume. Her long red hair is the main focal point as it is sculpted long and wavy. One concern we have with this sculpt is that it is hard to get her to stand on her own. Overall, she is great. The likeness, sculpt, and paint is no doubt Medusa.

Star-Lord – For anyone wondering, Star-Lord will be getting reissue and released through retail at a later time. Right now, he is the only character from this set to be getting a reissue in a new box set with a comic Gamora and new Drax figure. The figure is based on his modern comic book appearance and reuses shared parts with previous Marvel Legends figures, and includes a newly sculpted head, belt, and two new guns. The articulation, sculpt, and paint detail on this figure is excellent.

Blastaar – It is about time that Hasbro got to make Blastaar and this has been on our wishlists for years. Blastaar is based on his modern version. He is based on the Marvel Legends Avengers Movie Hulk mold and includes a newly sculpted head, belt, wrists gauntlets and legs. He also features big knee pads and boots. His mane is very detailed and twisted in a pony tail in the front. Overall, he is an excellent figure, but his blast effect attachments are needed to complete this figure.

Overall:

This is an outstanding box set exclusive that includes both A-list and B-list characters. It is most unfortunate that Hasbro makes so few of these for such a large Marvel fan base, and we hope to see updates to these characters such as a new costume or accessory down the road.

Highly Recommended.
