It’s the 30th Anniversary of the Ghostbusters this year and who better to release new toys other than Mattel. The original idea behind these new molds with the removable Proton Packs was that they planned to produce an Ecto-1 vehicle in the same scale as the 6″ figures, but failed to produce the minimum number of pre-orders needed at the $250 price point (it was supposed to have electronics and many other neat features).
Now that we have them in-hand, the absence of the Ecto-1 vehicle is noticed ever more now and we hope to see that released in a movie year at retail. That is the only way Mattel can do this at this point as fans have said it very clear they won’t support a high priced item like the Ecto-1 with a low production rate.
However, an update to the figures have been long overdue as this is the first time that all of them come with a proton stream (except Peter and Marshmallow Mess Ray). The 2-packs come as Peter Venkman/Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore/Ray Stanz and are currently in stock at Mattycollector for $50 each. We were very fortunate to be able to purchase these for $25 each during Early Access in September as Mattycollector listed it for the wrong price, which allowed some fans to get a 50% discount.

Sculpt & Paint:
All four Ghostbusters figures feature new torso’s with removable Proton Packs and use existings parts from previous Ghostbusters Classics figures. This was the major selling point of these figures for Mattel as they were meant to fit inside the Ecto-1, which could still see a release one day. All four figures come in their tan suits and have a paint upgrade to them compared to previous releases. They also have their black gloves painted on, which was not a feature with the previous tan suit releases.
Included with the ghostbusters are an unpainted glow-in-the-dark figure stand that used to have the red deco on it. Also included are Proton Streams, which is an important accessory as only two Ghostbusters Classics figures included it in the past (Peter and Marshmallow Mess Ray).
Articulation:
Standard for Ghostbusters Classics.
Accessories:
Removable Proton Packs, Proton Streams, Glow-In-The-Dark figure stands.
Overall:
Despite these figures not including Ghosts, the 2-packs with the removable Proton Packs are what fans have been asking for since the start, and we are very happy to finally own each tan suited figure with a proton stream. While we hope to see more Ghostbusters Classics released in the future, these will have to do for now.
The good news is that Mattel will be coming out The Real Ghostbusters action figures in 2015 and are looking forward to those. Hopefully they will be in 6″ scale, but if not, 4″ would be understandable as making an Ecto-1 and other vehicles, Fire House, and large scale ghosts like Samhain would cost less overall.
Highly Recommended.
