Eldor, along with Club Etheria Sweet Bee and the subscriber exclusive Light Hope figures are the last figures to be released under the management of Scott Neitlich. Scott left Mattel abruptly in October 2014 to start a new job at an unannounced company and position. With Scott now gone, it’s going to be interesting in what Mattel does with the Masters of the Universe Classics line. Mattel will need to hire a Brand Manager with as much dedication as Scott had to interact with fans, post video previews, answer questions on the Matty forums and ‘Ask Matty’ monthly question submissions, news posts, and everything else that Scott did.
Mattel’s new Brand Manager will also need advanced knowledge of Masters of the Universe, DC, Ghostbusters, and other lines that Mattycollector carried, and will look to carry in the future. The candidate will also need to go above and beyond the normal 9-5 business day because that is going to be what it takes to get the 2016 subscription green-lit.
Right now Mattel is probably still looking at how Scott’s absence will affect future plans such as mini-comics, bio’s, as well as other extra’s that might have happened if Scott stayed with Mattel. One thing is for certain, Masters of the Universe Classics will never be the same.
Eldor makes his action figure debut this month and is a character designed by Mattel in the 1987-1988. Mattel had taken the Masters of the Universe story to the past and this led to the creation of characters such as He-Ro, King Grayskull, and others. As fate would have it, the story was never meant to be and was ultimately scrapped in that time and toys like Eldor only had prototypes made. Since both He-Ro and King Grayskull action figures were made in Classics, it was only a matter of time before Mattel got to Eldor, and thankfully they did.
Availability: October 2014
Sculpt & Paint:
Eldor has a lot of new tooling and has a lot of sculpted texture on his hood, staff, book, beard, and helmet. He features a removable hood, sculpted tool belt with a hood, tags and a pouch. His hood is also loose and falls off too easily, and should have been sculpted to stay on better. Originally he was supposed to have two different hoods, one up and one down. Somewhere along the line this was scrapped and instead the left side is up, and the right side is down giving it both elements. This just doesn’t work as the hood can fall off too easily.
The staff of the Eldors has a lot of great texture at the top and the Book of Living Spells can be opened.
Eldor is painted in a copper helmet, brown jacket and hood, gold belt, grey pants, and dark brown boots.
Articulation:
Standard for MOTUC.
Accessories:
Staff of the Eldors, Book of Living Spells, exclusive Sticker sheet.
Overall:
Eldor is a beautifully sculpted figure and easily one of the best original designs released this year.
Highly Recommended.
Bio:
Real Name: R’tendril the Wise
The great sage and wizard of Preternia, Eldor arrived at a burning crater and discovered a Cosmic Warrior suffering from a strange techno virus with no memory of where he came from. Healing him in a mystic pool, Eldor inadvertently and unknowingly passed the warrior’s techno infection to the entire magical planet. In gratitude for saving his life, the Warrior agreed to become Eldor’s student and help free Eternia from the Snake Men. Until his memory was restored, Eldor dubbed him “Gray” in honor of Eternia’s brave king, and taught his apprentice to use a magic staff and the Book of Living Spells to defeat evil. Later Eldor used the secrets of Transformation to cast the Three Towers into Sub-turnia, awaiting a time of great Kings; when the past and future would need to intertwine. Eldor uses his magic as a member of King Grayskull’s Masters of the Universe® Classics the Universe!
