Playmates Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Original Comic Book Turtles 01

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Comic Book was an ongoing comic book series that ran from 1984-2010, making this a 26 year run. These figures just released from Playmates Toys in 4″ scale are to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. Shipping along with the Original Comic Book Turtles are the Kraang Robotic Foot Soldier and Tiger Claw. The case assortment on these apparently are two per case with the Kraang Robotic Foot Soldier and Tiger Claw only getting one figure per case.

This sculpt was first introduced at San Diego Comic-Con with a black and white deco of Raphael (see gallery below). That figure sold very well according to Playmates Toys at the show and for months it took them to list it on their official store. At this time Playmates Toys has not stated if the other three Turtles will be offered in black and white, and we are hoping that if they are, they will not offer them as SDCC exclusives, and use that slot to introduce an updated figure like the chrome Shredder exclusive from 2013.

A lot of fans have said they are unhappy with these figures and have stated that NECA already made these and have no interest in purchasing them. For the most part, they would be right. NECA did an excellent job on those figures and it’s hard to top something already great.

These new figures from Playmates Toys are made in the same style as the Nickelodeon TMNT animated series figures and while we like the sculpt and overall look of these, there is one aspect in the design that is disappointing that we’ll go into more detail below.

Aside from these being released in standard packaging, Toys “R” Us has pre-order for Leonardo and Michelangelo with a comic book included for $14.99 each.

Availability: October 2014

Sculpt & Paint:

Each figure shares the same sculpt, paint deco, head, a retooled mouth, and each has a bandana sculpted differently (see gallery). It is hard to tell them apart without their iconic weapons or facial expression. Leonardo has a closed mouth, Raphael has a left grin, Donatello a right grin, and Michelangelo a grin on both sides of his mouth. They each share the same sculpted texture on their bodies and each come with their iconic weapons.

One aspect about these figures that bothers us the most is that they don’t have wrist articulation. Their elbows have a swivel hinged joint and without the wrist swivel, this limits the range of motion that the weapons can be posed. It’s very noticeable on the figure when you play around with it that the wrists need articulation.

Each figure are painted in the same green, with a darker green shell, brown knee and elbow pads, brown wrist guards, yellow stomach, and a red bandana.

Articulation:

Ball-jointed head, hinged-swivel shoulders, hinged-swivel elbows, hinged hips, hinged-swivel knees.

Accessories:

Each Turtle includes their iconic weapons.

Overall:

It’s hard to recommend something to readers that’s already been done by another company with better articulation. While these are great to have if you like the currently style of TMNT figures currently out in stores, these are also unnecessary if you already own the NECA figures. If you don’t, then you should go out and pick these up.

These do have a great sculpt and Playmates Toys added a lot of detail to it. We just wish that these had wrist articulation. If they had that, we’d give it a higher grade.

Somewhat Recommended.
