DC Collectibles first wave of Batman: The Animated Series action figures includes Batman, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face. Batman, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face falls under The New Batman Adventures. These figures already made a strong impression on fans since they were announced earlier this year and there is still a lot of love for Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990’s.
This series first hit airways in 1992 and remained so popular, that Warner Brothers allowed Bruce Timm to continue the same continuity with Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited from 1992 to 2006. During this time, there were a lot of action figures made that all fit in the same continuity based on these shows.
After Justice League Unlimited ended, Mattel was able to continue the Justice League Unlimited toy line at retail and then on Mattycollector allowing collectors to nearly finish all of the in-show characters. While this line never sold that well on Mattcollector, fans were able collect toys for years after the show ended. When it came down to the final 3 Packs, the theory was that this style was retired and never to be picked up again.
Thankfully, DC Collectibles surprised everyone earlier in 2014 before New York Toy Fair with the announcement of 6″ Batman action figures based on the Bruce Timm series and revived this otherwise dead style of DC figures. This announcement makes way for an all new way to collect DC figures. While they are out of scale with all previous lines based on this style, they also offer more articulation and accessories. From the information that we’ve gathered from DC Collectibles so far, they plan to release figures based on this series, the movies, and even eventually make figures based on Superman: The Animated Series. While this sounds great, we also hope to see them make figures based on Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited and get to every character that Mattel released, and some others including Granny Goodness, Rampage, and many other in show characters that have not been released to plastic form in this style.
Special thank you to DC Collectibles for sending Catwoman along to us to review.
Availability: November 2014
Sculpt & Paint:
Catwoman has an all new sculpt and features the likeness of her animated appearance on Batman: The Animated Series. She stands at 5-1/2 inches tall and has a thin, lean and smooth sculpt. She includes a ball-jointed head, ball-jointed hinged shoulders, hinged-swivel elbows, hinged-swivel wrists, hinged-swivel hips, hinged-swivel knees, and hinged rocker ankles. Included with Catwoman is a figure stand with an acrylic hook that’s adjustable and a base with images of Catwoman and the show’s logo.
Catwoman is painted in her show accurate grey and black costume, with a gold belt and red lipstick.
The cat included also is show accurate and has a ball-jointed head, four swivel legs at the hips and a swivel tail. The cat is painted black with big yellow eyes.
Cat, figure stand and base, 3 sets of interchangeable hands, whip, necklace, binoculars.
Catwoman is an excellent figure and we feel that every fan of the show will want one. It is also great to see that DC Collectibles kept their promise and included a bunch of accessories as they said they would at New York ToyFair 2014. The only improvement that DC Collectibles can make on these going forward is to hide the pin that’s viewable at the top of her thighs from the front and back.
