Funko’s Marvel Collectors Corps Secret Wars Box Set is now reaching your doorsteps and we couldn’t be more excited to see what Funko did with it. The first two boxes of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man followed a similar formula and we were disappointed with the overall offerings.
If you’ve been reading Marvel’s Secret Wars currently out on comic shelves you would know that the sky’s the limit as to what Funko can do for this. There are dozens of tie-ins outside the main story including some fan-favorites like Marvel Zombies, X-Men 1992, Age of Apocalypse, Years of Future Past, Civil War, and so many others. So there’s a lot for Funko to work with without having limited options compared to a feature film.
Funko begins the box set with another button and patch option, and if you’ve read our review of the Ant-Man box set, we had expressed our concerns about them going with a certain formula, which apparently continues in this box set as well. The button has Iron Man and the patch shows The Falcon.
Next up is the tee shirt, and again there has been a tee shirt in every box set so far, which only continues our concerns about this formula. The tee shirt has four characters including POP! versions of Iron Man (shown on the button), The Falcon (shown on the patch), Thor (exclusive POP! Vinyl Figure), and Spider-Man Miles Morales (exclusive POP! Vinyl Figure). Since we normally don’t wear the tee-shirts, this takes away a lot of potential as the box could have included some mystery mini’s from several of the tie-ins, or even a mystery mini Lord Doom figure. That would have made a bit more sense.
A Secret Wars #1 exclusive comic book cover showing Thor is next and this is one of the better offerings this time around. We love collectibles toys and comics, and the only downside here is that there’s only one offered. We would have gladly replaced the pin, patch, and tee-shirt for a couple of more comic cover variations based on several of the tie-ins as well.
The best offering this month are not just one, but two standard POP! Vinyl Bobble-Head figures including Thor and Spider-Man Miles Morales. While Funko is overdoing it on Thor between the tee-shirt, comic, and now the POP!, we also would have chosen Thor as they are Doom’s enforcers and an important part of the story. Spider-Man Miles Morales in Secret Wars is an odd choice for an exclusive POP!. We haven’t been reading any of the Spider-Man tie-ins, so we can’t comment on the characters place in Secret Wars. However, we feel that their are better character choices for this spot including Lord Doom, any Marvel Zombie (which would have awesome), X-Men ’92, and any other number of characters.
Overall:
This box set is better compared to the previous two offerings, but we would have made some changes as mentioned above, and lets be honest, Funko needs to start moving away from this particular formula and start the box without the pin and patch for a change. There are so many options out there and in a theme like Secret Wars, they could have done so much better to bring as much of the story into this box set as possible. It’s a missed opportunity in our opinion.
Recommended.
