Playmates Toys shown their Half Shell Heroes line-up back at New York ToyFair 2015 that we had covered for you at that time. This is a 2″ line geared for children 3+ as opposed to the larger 5″ figures that the majority of our readership relates too. With that in mind, these are cute, scaled down figures based on the new Nickelodeon series that’s great for display or to pass down to your children to get them ready for a lifelong Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan.
The Half Shell Heroes Mutations Fire Truck To Tank has a pretty neat mutations gimmick allowing you to flip and turn the truck into two different vehicles. What immediately caught our attention is that the front of the Fire Truck reminds us of Optimus Prime of the Autobots, and the tank could be a resemblance of the Transformers Generation 2 Megatron. Both franchises started out in the 1980’s and have their own loyal fan base following. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to combine these franchises since their are alternate realities out there as both have suggested and they have both had successful crossovers in the past (G.I. Joe/Transformers, TMNT/Ghostbusters, etc.). A crossover toy line such as a pre-school line would be epic for both franchises and we are really tempted to apply some Autobot labels on this firetruck. What is more interesting is there are actual rumors out there right now that there could be a Transformers cameo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Hopefully there is something to that.
Thank you to Playmates Toys for providing Half Shell Heroes Mutations Fire Truck To Tank to us to review.

The Half Shell Heroes line expands into the Mutations story and the truck has the ability to convert from a Fire Truck into a Tank with one easy flip and turn maneuver. The Fire Truck and Tank measures 6″ in length, 4-5/8″ width. The Fire Truck includes a pivoting and rotating water cannon on top that is capable of rotating 180 degrees.
The sides of the Fire Truck are a little wobbly and don’t line-up with the sides of the front piece. This is for the mutation gimmick can fold and convert into the tank. There are also two labels applied to the side doors with the word Fire on both sides.
The Tank has some great armor details including bolts, plated armor on the front, a sculpted door on the back, and a cannon on top with a larger oval flat surface covering it. The cannon is sculpted onto the Tank and does not include any pivoting joints or rotation. This is unfortunate as the Fire Truck has this feature. The other downside here is that the flat oval shaped piece sculpted to the front of the cannon, it takes away from the shape and look of the cannon itself and looks out of place.
There is definitely some great sculpting added to the vehicle in both the Fire Truck and Tank modes, and we do appreciate all the great engineering that went into this toy. It’s a complex thing to think up something that can convert into two different vehicles, so we can appreciate all the work that went into that.
The tires are about 2-1/4″ in diameter and are nice and big for getting around and driving over some villains in either mode. While a tank usually has tank treads, the tires work well enough.
Included with the vehicle is Raphael, who does not come with the R on his belt, or sais sculpted into his hands. These are two key features that should have been included. The paint apps are all there including for the bandages, helmet, chest, and shell. But he does look defenseless without that sais, and considering that he doesn’t have a steering wheel to hold onto in either vehicle mode, his hands are left without anything to hold or do.
Playmates Toys Half Shell Heroes line is great for kids of any age as well as some adult collectors that wish to display them next to the larger 5″ scale figures or on their own. This is a great scale for large scale vehicles and play sets as it’s cheaper to produce those for this scale, rather than a larger one.
