Masters Of The Universe Classics Point Dread & Talon Fighter Review

Masters Of The Universe Classics Point Dread and Talon Fighter 14

Masters of the Universe Classics has come a long way since its launch in 2008. December marks the final vintage figures to see an update in Classics, with additional figures coming your way in 2016. Never have we thought the line would make it this far, considering its bumpy road and how close it was to being cancelled. With the new roadmap drown out a couple of years ago, the line is now coming to an end and fans will be able to own the entire vintage line updated in Classics this year (well, for the most part).

In November, Mattel offered Dragstor, the 200X Subscription Queen Grayskull figure, and the Point Dread and Talon Fighter Set. The Point Dread and Talon Fighter Set includes a new Teela figure, which a lot of fans are able to obtain her 2009 release. So this month you get some great additions to your Masters of the Universe Classics collection, and none of these are products you want to miss out on. Masters of the Universe Classics is one of those lines have come a long way over the years, from not just figures, to beasts, vehicles, and even a Castle Grayskull, and their upcoming Snake Mountain playset. It’s amazing that the fans are backing this line even with all of the hiccups along the way, and the dedication of The Four Horsemen and Mattel to deliver these great products every month is astonishing.

With December approaching rapidly, we are looking forward to the final figures of the year, and even more excited about what’s to come in 2016.

Availability: November 2015

Masters Of The Universe Classics Point Dread and Talon Fighter 31

The Talon Fighter comes packaged in three parts and once put together, it measures about 17 inches long, and can hold two Masters of the Universe Classics figures (or two female figures in the back seat, with another figure in the front, so this vehicle can actually hold three figures). When Mattel first showed this vehicle back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, we were impressed with how large it was. Owning it now, we are equally as impressed and could not wait to open the box. The vehicle has some weight to it due to its size and all the plastic being used, and proportionally it works well with the Point Dread and Castle Grayskull. Any smaller, and it wouldn’t work as well. The Talon Fighter comes with the four cannons, the RADAR dish, the hatch, and the wings that you need to attach to the vehicle, and all of these are easy to assemble.

The Talon Fighter has all of the original vintage features including the pivoting cockpit, bird head, wings, feet, computers, and all of the details including the sculpting to the head, wings, and sides are all there. The vehicle also has the underside that continues with the bird theme with the sculpted feather pattern. The back has some newly sculpted detail with the exhaust ports and circuitry.

The cockpit is the best part of the vehicle, with all of those great computers, buttons, dials, control panels, and knobs are just superb. These are placed on the front, side panels, and back panel. The side panels is the back seat are stickers, but still visually interesting.

Included for the computer dashboard is a sticker sheet with instructions and you can decide one of three stickers to put on. For us, we choose not to use the sticker. The choices are a radar screen, Beast Man targeting lock, and Cringer and Orko.

Moving onto the Point Dread playset, it comes in three main parts – the base, the point dome, and the Talon Fighter perch. The perch is the flat piece that is connected to the top that is used to mount the Talon Fighter, and has been completely redesigned to be made of metal. On it, there are sculpted tech details as well as a paint wash to make it more visually appearing. The top piece has pegs on top that snap onto the bird feet, which helps it stay securely in place, and is also easy to remove. All you have to do is slide a small button on the underside to remove the vehicle.

The remaining two parts are the upper and lower domes that snap into place. You need to securely lock it into place, otherwise it won’t hold the Talon Fighter in place. There are “teeth” sculpted to help the two parts snap together and to help guide you to put it together correctly. The interior of the Point Dread features a wood floor boards, as well as a removable computer console that sits up against the wall, and it is large enough to hold at least two figures. The exterior have the same stone walls used for Castle Grayskull.

As you can see from the box, the Talon Fighter and Point Dredd works well with Castle Grayskull and while not everyone will choose to place the Point Dredd on top, we believe visually it makes it more interesting.

Finally, Mattel offered a new Teela figure included in the set and is meant to be the long overdue Teela 2.0 figure that so many people have been waiting for. While this figure is not meant to be Filmation Teela, she is meant to be more of a sign of relief for all of those people unable to obtain the 2009 release of Teela, since her secondary market prices are off the charts. You can take a look at the prices going on at eBay and see for yourself.

Teela 2.0 is poly-bagged in the box, which is unusual for a MOTUC figure. She features two heads (helmeted with a visor and standard), and a Filmation-accurate sword and shield. She includes some reused parts from the 2009 release including the boots and arms, and the original She-Ra gauntlets. This figure does come with a functional waist swivel, which is something that 2009 Teela did not have. You can see on the back of our Teela, the clothing is oddly cut at the waist and instead of a straight line, it’s more zig zagged. This doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue (see image below).

The upper body has some nicely sculpted gold armor that’s different than the 2009 Teela figure. Her collar is bigger than the first release, and does not interfere with her neck articulation. The armor also appears to make her look a bit heavy, and is not as nearly as detailed as the original release.

Her standard head sculpt has a pointy chin, where the 2009 release was more flat. There is also the issue with her forehead being too big, and her face starts too far down. It’s almost as if her face slid down her head? It just throws her entire look off. This head just doesn’t feel like it’s the standard MOTUC style. The helmeted head with visor works better, and if you don’t own a 2009 Teela, the standard head is a nice substitute nonetheless.

Overall:

There is a lot of love about each part of this set especially the Talon Fighter, Point Dredd, and Teela 2.0. We are especially fond of the Talon Fighter and Point Dredd, with Teela needing some slight changes. We hope to see a Teela figure updated again in her Filmation or 200X look from Mattel, as either might be better than this release.

If you owned either the Talon Fighter and Point Dredd as a child, or are looking to enhance your collection, you will not be disappointed.

Highly Recommended.
