Funko Marvel Collector Corps Guardians Of The Galaxy Box Set Review

Funko Marvel Collector Corps Guardians Of The Galaxy Box Set 01

Funko’s latest Marvel Collector Corps offering this month is themed Guardians of the Galaxy. When it was first revealed, we had reached out to Funko asking if this were comic or movie based, and they had offered a response with “both,” which was quite encouraging.

If you read our previous reviews of the Collector Corps box sets, we’ve expressed our concerns and even talked to Funko about offering more of a variety to the Collector Corps that may or may not include a pouch, pin, Pop! Tees, and other collectibles. Since this is the first official Marvel subscription, it needs to be the best it can possibly be and offer a wide range of collectibles that are different in each box set. We’ve noticed that Funko has fallen into a pattern in the previous sets, and while this set also follows some of that same pattern, it does offer a nice selection of collectibles not previously offered in other boxes.

The good news here is that we think Funko has offered a very nice set this month and have taken the opportunity to introduce fans to some different Funko collectibles. If you are familiar with what the company offers, you can see that this month offers the most diversity of collectibles offered yet.

Unfortunately, this is going to be one of the final reviews that we do for the Marvel Collector Corps and Funko at this time, due to a dispute with the company. This is most regrettable and we know we get a very large Funko following. While our reviews will stop after the first 6 Collector Corps boxes for Funko (unless they send us press samples), we will also be offering them limited news coverage until circumstances change.

If you have not received your box set just yet, you may want to stop reading this as there are spoilers and reveals below.

Availability: December 2015

Starting with the unboxing, Funko once again offered a patch and pin set located on top of the box, with a Rocket Raccoon patch and Groot pin that we also found some listings at Amazon.com for those interested.

We’ve expressed our concerns with Funko over starting each box set with this formula as it does take the place of something else, as the demand won’t be as high as other products.

Next up is a new variant comic book of Guardians of Infinity #1. This is a Christmas edition cover with Groot covered in colored Christmas lights and Rocket decorating him. It’s a nice looking cover, but not something we would normally purchase.

No Pop! Tee this month, and instead it was replaced with the first ever Pop! Scarf designed with the Guardians of the Galaxy Pop! characters of Groot, Rocket, Starlord, Gamora, and Drax. The scarf is well knitted and nicely designed.

This is also the first Pop! Ceramic Mug to make it into the Marvel Collectors Corps and Funko offered Starlord. The Mug is part of their Pop! Home collection and meant as a display piece, and not necessarily something to be used to pour your morning coffee.

Lastly, the final item is a 2 pack of Pop! Bobblers, with mini versions of Groot and Rocket that can also be used as ornaments for your tree. The problem here is that you can only display these for less than a month a year, and while they look nice, Pop! Ornaments have no business being in subscription boxes according to Funko collectors, and its a statement we can agree with.

Overall:

Funko went a little winter cold theme in this months box with the comic, scarf, and Pop! Ornaments. Maybe its too much considering if you don’t celebrate Christmas? Still, these are nice looking items, but items like the scarf, comic, and the ornaments have limited use considering these are holiday items, and should have been left out of the subscription. There is also the issue that Gamora and Drax are underused in this box set.

However, Funko did offer some new items never before offered in the subscription boxes, as we had previously stated they are becoming too repetitive. One would say be careful what you wish for.

Recommended.
