Playmates Toys TMNT: Out of the Shadows movie toys are available now in stores and online, and one good thing about this film is that it introduces two iconic characters of the 1980’s and 90’s, Bebop and Rocksteady. In the classic cartoon, these characters were introduced as humans as part of a street gang, and tricked by Shredder and Kraang to become mutated into the mutants you know them as today. Given their new film appearance, it’s safe to assume that both characters will follow a similar bio to their classic animated counterparts. From the movie trailers that we’ve seen, we already know that Bebop and Rocksteady are smarter, and more formidable, as opposed to being dimwitted and easily outsmarted. There is a quote in the animated series, that one of the Turtles saying that if Rocksteady and Bebop had half a brain between them, they could become formidable for the turtles. It looks like that is what Out of the Shadows Bebop and Rocksteady are like, and if there is any indication, the Turtles are going to have just as hard a time defeating them as they did with Tokka and Rahzar from Secret of the Ooze.
TMNT: Out of the Shadows hits theaters on June 3rd, 2016.
Availability: April 2016
The Rhino Chopper comes with an exclusive Rocksteady figure that gets an all-new head sculpt, that is sculpted with the green helmet and brown goggles, and that pays homage to the 1988 Rocksteady action figure. What sets that apart from the single packaged figure, is that his ears don’t stick up over the helmet, and are instead underneath. Usually, there are fan complaints that some of the 2012-2016 animated figures have missing paint apps compared to the press images. The good news with the TMNT: Out of the Shadows movie toys is that Playmates Toys have offered all the paint apps, articulation, and tooling required to make these toys great. This Rocksteady figure is the best figure ever offered from the company (with the exception of the 6″ Classics).
Rocksteady is given a new head sculpt with the green helmet and brown goggles (as we mentioned above), and reuses the body as the standard packaged figure. His rhino skin is sculpted with some texture, and sculpted over the skin is a black leather vest, black tattoo on his stomach, gold necklaces, and there are three black tattoos on his right arm. The jacket has some silver dots on the front, and some red lettering that says RS (Rocksteady). There is also lettering on the back, which is left painted in black. His wrists have chains that were sculpted on, which were left the same grey color as the skin, and should have been painted in gold. Sculpted over his fingers are bracelets that reads “your face” on both hands.
His pants are painted in a light brown-orange color with green stripes, a light brown belt, and brown shoes. Included with Rocksteady are the club and hammer that is also included with the single card release, as well as an exclusive nail bat, which is only available in this set. The articulation includes a swivel head, hinged-swivel shoulders, hinged-swivel elbows, swivel wrists, hinged-swivel hips, and hinged-swivel knees.
The Chopper is nicely detailed and features two firing green grenade launchers at the bottom, a double kick stand that swivels, two rotating tires, small green grenades sculpted to the top, the words RS sculpted on the orange seat, handlebars, rhino horns on the front tire cover, and a single holster that can hold the nail bat. There is a lot of nice tooling on the body, with lots of line work that was left all in one solid color. The headlight also has some sculpted lines and painted in yellow, and the exhaust pipes are painted in bronze.
Overall:
The Rhino Chopper is an excellent set and one that both old and new fans will love. We especially like the look of a mutant rhino on a motorcycle, as this is something new for the character.
Highly Recommended.
