Thank you to Hasbro for providing their San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Exclusive Transformers Generations Power Of The Primes – Throne Of The Primes Optimal Optimus Figure.

Availability: San Diego Comic-Con – July 2018

Optimal Optimus was first introduced in the Beast Wars toyline in the late 1990’s, which was created by legendary Hasbro designer Aaron Archer and several other people working on Transformers at the time. This particular body was also used in the television series when Optimus Primal became a Prime, merging with Optimus Prime on the Ark in pre-historic Earth. This new release is something different, and while the sculpt pays tribute to the classic toy and some story elements, and this figure can become two additional figures, including Optimus Primal in his season 1 beast gorilla form, as well as his season 1 robot mode. The original Optimal Optimus had six different modes, which was featured on both the toy as well as the Beast Wars television show. There are several variations of this new Optimal Optimus/Optimus Primal figure available for 2018, which includes this figure that’s repainted to pay homage to Optimal Primal as seen in his season 1 colors, a color scheme to the vintage toy that Hasbro is bringing to retail, and Takara-Tomy is also offering both color schemes as well.

Optimal Optimus is packaged in a diorama that looks like a jungle and a throne for him to sit on, along with detailed artwork including images of G1 Transformers on the sides, and a halo of Primes that spins behind the throne, and can hold the 13 different Primes (4 are included in this set – Nexus Prime, Amalgamous Prime, Prima Prime, and the legendary 13th Prime.

Optimal Optimus is sculpted in a brand new sculpt for 2018, and is a repaint of the retailer version that pays tribute to the original toy and Beast Wars television appearance. This San Diego Comic-Con 2018 exclusive is painted after Optimus Primal as seen in the first season of Beast Wars, which includes his dark and light grey, white and red color scheme, with a blue helmet. This figure however also comes with a crown, which as Beast Wars fans might recall a crown was placed on the head of Waspinator as well as he was seated on a throne by pre-historic humans. He was the sole survivor of the Predacons following Megatron II’s capture and defeat by the Maximals, and they left for Cybertron in the future as seen in the series finale – Endgame Part II. Anyway, it seems strange to see Optimus Primal with a crown on his head, but this is something new and definitely our favorite Transformers exclusive figure this year.

The robot mode for Optimal Optimus resembles that of the vintage design, including the design of the arms, wings on the arms that rotate, cockpit on the chest, circular design on the shoulders, and design of the legs. The crown however is new to the design, as well as the deco and blasters on the sides of his legs as opposed to clear missiles that the vintage toy had. The vintage toy also had cannons above the cockpit, which was not transitioned into this new design. The figure does come with a new Scepter of Sparks accessory that can hold all of the included 4 Prime Master figures. The Prime Master figures are placed inside of it in robot mode.

Optimal Optimus can transform into a giant gorilla from here, and this form has a skate board that is made up of the robot mode part of Optimus Primal. The gorilla form is nicely done and has most of the articulation as the larger Optimus Primal mode, with the exception that his legs are half way hidden inside. The back of the chest of this mode is hollow and nothing is there behind the chest and underneath the head. The skateboard becomes a backpack for this mode, and the two cannons are placed over his shoulders, which is an usual turn of events as the season 1 Optimus Primal gorilla form could only do this in robot mode, not beast mode.

The skateboard becomes the robot mode, which is the smallest of the modes. and he comes with two blasters/swords that were stored on the legs in the other two previous forms. This mode has the head hidden inside the chest, and has the cockpit part hidden on his back.

Both of these modes can be displayed at the same time, or put back together to create the larger Optimal Optimus figure.

The final mode is the jet mode, which was also used on the vintage toy and seen in the Beast Wars animated series. In jet mode, the cockpit is infant, the cannons are put on his back, wings are spread out, and arms and legs are straight forward. In this mode, Optimal Optimus can fly great distances. This mode required both the gorilla and robot mode body’s to combine once again.

Also featured on this figure are Maximal stickers in several of the modes as seen in the gallery
