McFarlane Toys The Walking Dead Negan & Bloody Negan 7″ Figures Review

McFarlane Toys will be offering two versions of their The Walking Dead Negan 7″ Color Tops figure, with the bloody Negan variant figure being a Wal-Mart Exclusive. As announced back at New York ToyFair 2017, the 7″ Color Tops figures will feature more articulation than seen in previous releases, which includes leg articulation to create some dynamic poses. Both figures will be available in Mid-June 2017, and are priced at $19.99. The regular (non-bloody) version will be available at most major retailers.

Leader of the group known as The Saviors, Negan is one of the most merciless enemies to ever cross paths with Rick Grimes and the other survivors. With no remorse, Negan executes those who get in his way with his weapon of choice, Lucille. With the barrel end wrapped in barbed wire, Lucille is the iconic baseball bat that Negan wields to not only intimidate others, but eliminate them as well. In the current season of The Walking Dead’s premier, Negan was introduced to fans, Negan showed Rick that he was no force to be reckoned with, as he introduced both Glenn and Abraham to Lucille, and brutally beat them to death as their friends kneeled helplessly in horror. The blood splattered Negan figure shows the aftermath of that encounter, with his body covered in Glenn’s and Abraham’s blood.

Thank you to McFarlane Toys for providing their The Walking Dead Negan & Bloody Negan 7″ Figures for review.

Availability: Mid-June 2017

Negan stands at 7″ tall and depicts the likeness of Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan and the actor has been digitally 3D scanned to create an authentic and accurate representation. While some fans have been disappointed with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s portrayal of Negan, which is a shame as he’s such a memorable character in the comics, the likeness at least in the clothing is pretty good. Negan is sculpted in his black leather jacket, removable red scarf, brown belt, dark grey pants and black boots. He also has two removable black gloved hand sculpts for his right hand. His head sculpt is really good, and depicts the likeness of  Jeffrey Dean Morgan extremely well. Every bit of detail, including the grey beard, mustache, and facial details almost make the figure come to life. Unless you’re Hot Toys, this is mostly unheard of, but McFarlane Toys have been coming a long way in this line over the years. They’ve been progressing extremely well in both the 5″ and 7″ line, and this Negan figure is a great addition to the line.

As stated back at New York ToyFair, the Color Tops line will have more articulation, and Negan is the first figure from The Walking Dead to have more articulation added. The lack of articulation in previous figures such as Rick Grimes, Michonne, Carl Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Abraham, Travis Manawa and Madison Clark has been disappointing as none of them had leg articulation, and also limited range of motion in the body. Negan is the first attempt at more articulation, and is the first figure to have leg articulation in this scale. It’s not perfect, as the hip joints can barely move and there is no ankle articulation. The hip joints are cast in hard plastic, and the upper part of the pants that hands down hingers the motion of the hips, and prevents it from a full range of motion. The figure does have a ball-jointed neck with limited movement, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, ball jointed wrists, limited hip movement, swivel-hinged knees, and swivel boots. What is needed here is additional articulation in the feet, or ankle articulation, as well as a swivel waist, and better movement in the hips. While this is a display piece, more articulation is needed to create some dynamic poses, and fans of Diamond Select Toys 7″ Select figures know that they will be getting a figure packed with all of the articulation he can handle, just as if the figure stepped right out of the comic or film. What McFarlane needs to do is take a 7″ Select figure, and mirror the articulation to give it a more authentic range of motion.

The bloody Negan figure has blood splattered on his shirt, pants, left hand, face, and of course, Lucille (baseball bat). The blood splattered deco is extremely well done, and the blood looks to be soaked into the clothing, especially the pants as its darker than the shirt. Lucille’s barbed wire is covered in blood, as this was the part that was used to end both Abraham and Glenn.

Overall, Negan is an excellent figure, and McFarlane Toys have done an incredible job capturing the likeness, and have given fans a good figure. The sculpt is most impressive, as is the deco, and likeness to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
