Hasbro has finally given what fans have been clamoring for since the arrival of Netflix’s Marvel series, branded as the Marvel Knights series with a Man Thing as the build-a-figure. The series includes MCU Daredevil, MCU Punisher, MCU Jessica Jones, MCU Elektra, Blade and Bullseye; all packed with a piece to build a hulking sized Man Thing.
Dr. Ted Sallis was scientist working for who he thought was the US government, trying to recreate the super soldier serum. After discovering failed human test subjects, he found out and confirmed that he had actually been working for A.I.M. In a struggle to destroy the formula, he was shot escaping into the swamp, Sallis drank the formula and spilled the rest on himself as he sank deep into the swamp. Dr. Ted Sallis was presumed dead until he arose as Man Thing!
Man Thing debuted in 1971 Savage Tales #1. He stands just at 8″ tall. Man Thing sometimes appears with skulls throughout his body or branches coming out of his back; however this figure is based off a more wholesome version of him with just some twigs, mushrooms, and shag grass sculpted in.
Man Thing is mostly painted in different shades of green with some brown highlights mixed in. He has his signature roots hanging from his face with piercing red eyes. The sculpt work is very nice and the paint wash was done really well. The figure has on the top of his back, a peg hole, to which I still can’t find a reason for. The figure includes no accessories, which is not that uncommon for build-a-figures to lack. His torso has a soft rubber overlay, perhaps as a cost saving measure, but gives the figure this great textured feel to it. The figure appears to be all new tooling, with the possible exception of his upper torso that has the rubber overlay on it.
Man Thing has the average amount of articulation we’ve come to know and love with Marvel Legends figures. His articulation includes a ball jointed neck, ball jointed shoulders, bicep swivel, single-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ab crunch chest, ball jointed hips with limited range of motion, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and swivel-hinged ankles. When moving his hands, they tend to easily pop out, which is no big deal because they can easily plug back in.
Man Thing is one of those figures that I thought ToyBiz had done an amazing job on and it was going to be hard to beat. I still have mixed feeling as to which I prefer, on one hand the ToyBiz figure has a super detailed sculpt and has an overall menacing look about him, but the Hasbro figure is a more imposing figure with its size alone and is more in line with the figures we are currently getting from Hasbro. Ultimately I will have to call it a tie, I truly love both figures and this wave of Marvel Legends figures doesn’t really have any weak character in it, so you’ll end up completing your Man Thing anyway.
