Availability: January 2018

The lions are individually packaged and sold separately, and you will need all five to build Voltron. The packaging consists of the retro 1980’s design, including artwork of Voltron on the front, and images of the lions on back with Voltron shown in his combined form on the upper right hand side. The black lion comes in a window box packaging with the same artwork and design as the smaller lions. The red, blue, green and yellow lions each come with accessories for the lions, and the smallest two, the red and lion comes with the sword and shield of Voltron.

Each of the five lions are around the same size as least years offerings that were based on the Netflix television series currently streaming, and as you are aware these are based on the 1984 series. The black lion is the largest in the set, and becomes the head, and chest of Voltron. This lion does not come with accessories compared to the other lions. The yellow and blue lions are the second largest, and the red and green lions are the smallest. The yellow, red, blue and green lions each comes with add on attachments such as missile launches that plug onto their hip joints, and these attachments are customizable and can be placed on any four of the hips. In addition, their blades can be stored in their mouths. The lions are also fully articulated just like last years offerings, such as multiple joints of articulation in the legs, jaw hinges, tail, and chest. The black lion is the only lion in the set who’s jaw can remain open, as the other lions jaws automatically stay shut and need to be manually opened each time to place the weapon inside their mouths. The black lion is also the only lion with the electronic features, such as key phrases from the show and light effects. This is activated by pressing the button on the right side of the rib. The paint applications on the lions are extremely well done, and between that and great sculpting, these are excellent representations of the classic series.

Each of the lions become key components for Voltron, such as the blue and yellow becomes the legs, and the red and green lions becomes the arms. The attachments aren’t necessary to remain on the lions in this form, as Voltron has his own accessories.

Voltron stands at roughly 18″ tall with the wings fully extended up, and depicts the likeness as seen in the classic series. The figure includes electronic features, such as phrases and lights that are activated by pressing the button on the right side of his rib (the black lion). The phrases includes quotes from each of the paladins, as seen on the show, and the light effects work on the front chest plate.  Once combined, the lions are very sturdy, and everything works well together.

The head sculpt has a great likeness to the character, which is hidden inside the mouth of the black lion, and folds downward, using the black lions head as a helmet. The head can hinged and swivel, and is capable of rotating. The red and green lions have swivel hinged shoulders, hinged and swivel joints on the body, which becomes the elbows, and a swivel neck for the lions, which become the hands that can hold the sword and shield. The hips are on a swivel-hinged joint, with swivel thighs and hinged knees. The blue and yellow lions don’t offer much as far as articulation, but that heads on on a swivel and hinge joint, and become the feet.

In this form, Voltron is amazingly detailed, and with the sword and shield in his hands, this is one menacing looking robot.

Overall, fans of the Classic Voltron series and fans of the franchise will definitely want to add these lions to their collection, and it’s too hard to resist to build Voltron. This is definitely one of the better offerings in the franchises history, and we would most definitely recommend this to even the most casual of fans.
