Hasbro Star Wars The Black Series 6″ Dewback & Sandtrooper Figures Review

Hasbro is expanding their Star Wars The Black Series 6″ line with Dewback, which is the first beast sized figure released in years that has been incorporated into this line. Last year, Hasbro did expand this line with some smaller vehicles such as Rey’s and Luke’s Landspeeders. This year however they are following what was offered first, beast sized figures in the early days of the line such as the Wampa and Tauntaun, which were both found on the planet Hoth.

The Dewback is an interested looking lizard creature that we feel has been a bit underused in the films and other entertainment such as in several of the recent animated series and comic books. Despite not having enough appearances in the Star Wars Universe, the design alone is just too cool looking and we like how this turned out better than Hasbro’s previously offered Wampa and Tauntaun figures. To be fair, the sculpted and technology used to make these figures has improved in the past couple of years, so that only helps in the long run when capturing the likenesses and detail on the newest figures.

Thank you to Entertainment Earth for providing Hasbro’s Star Wars The Black Series 6Dewback & Sandtrooper Figures for review.

Dewback measures roughly 13” long and almost 7” in height and features an excellent likeness to how he was featured in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The sculpt on the Dewback is just amazingly detailed, and the entire skin of the giant lizard is textured and feels rough to the touch just like a real reptile. The sculpt is bulky in the body and thins out down by the legs and tip of the tail, and some fur details on his back.

This is the largest beast sized Star Wars figure that Hasbro has offered so far in the 6” line, and Hasbro does not disappoint in anyway. The articulation on the Dewback is so well done and executed, and we especially love the deco especially on the tongue. The neck is ball jointed, and the jaw and tongue are hinged. The tail is also ball jointed allowing you to move it around to some degree. The neck joint has a more limited range of motion than the tail, and the head cannot look side to side as shown on the front of the box. The legs are also articulated, which includes the hips, knees, ankles and toes. The extra articulation in the knees, ankles and toes helps best when displaying Dewback on an uneven surface such as rocks or sand.

The deco is nicely done, and includes two shades of green, with most of the sculpt using the lighter green, and the darker green is found on his back, top of his head and tail, and the top of his hips. The tongue is pink with black wash over it, and also gives it a realistic look. The interior of the mouth is also nicely painted and sculpt, and is primarily pink. The teeth are painted in an off white.

The saddle requires assembly and needs to be put on the back until it locks into place. The saddle includes two bags on each side, and has a light grey blanket on the back folded and secured with brown straps. The saddle and bags are textured and this has a leather look to it. The straps that the Sandtrooper hold are part of Dewback’s sculpt and are connected to a silver piece on the sides of his mouth, and around his neck. The straps also have a leather look to it, and parts of it are wrapped in light grey bandages.

The Sandtrooper is a reused figure sculpt from the earlier release, and has a gray-pauldron with brown wash over it. The armor also has the brown wash over various places to indicate sand, which is nicely done. The paint applications on the helmet are also slightly different than the earlier release as shown in the gallery. The white and black plastic is nicely done and the wash over the sculpt is different than what has been seen so far. The backpack looks to be the same as the earlier release, and fits nicely on his back. Also included is a DLT-19 blaster rifle and a spear.

Overall, Dewback with Sandtrooper are great additions to Hasbro’s Star Wars The Black Series lineand fans will not be disappointed from this. We especially love the attention to detail that Dewbackwas given and this is surely one figure you do not want to miss.
