Star Trek: Designing Starships Vol. 2 is a hardcover book that includes 240 pages of detailed information on how the designers went about creating some of the most memorable Starships seen in the franchise. The book kicks off with a look at how the Starship Voyager, as seen in the tv series, was created and a look at all of the sketches and design concepts that went into the creation of the look behind the scenesIn the book, it statues that the design for Voyager had drew inspiration by a Killer Whale, a Starfleet Runabout, and a sleek and curvy car. In the Voyager chapter, the design took many different concepts, including ones with a Finn, before the producers approved something similar to the final design. In this chapter, additional concept ships are shown that were designed by Jim Martin.
The book also has chapters with a detailed look at the designs for other Federation ships, as well as concepts of ships not in any of the shows, and some Alien vessels that were seen in the shows. This includes The Aeroshuttle, The Delta Flyer, Neelix’s Ship, the Raven (wrecked Federation ship that brought Seven of Nine and her parents to the Delta Quadrant where they were assimilated by the Borg), Prometheus, Equinox, Federation Scout Ship, Phoenix (the first human ship with transwarp drive), NX Inspection Pod, NX-Alpha, Enterprise-J (future Federation ship as seen in Star Trek: Enterprise), a Medusan ship, Gorn Starship, Klingon Bird-Of-Prey, V-Ger the Living Machine, Romulan Warbird, Voldore, Romulan Bird-of-Prey, ECS Horizon, Vahklas, Aeon Timeship, Federation Holoship, Renegades’ Ship, Borg Sphere, Voth City Ship, Voth Research Ship, Andorian Battle Cruiser, Intrepid, Antares, Xindi Insectoid Warship, Xindi Reptilian Warship, Xindi Aquatic Ships.
Fans of Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Enterprise will recognize the names and images of the ships shown in this book, which is an in-depth look at the designing process. Many of the images and information collected are exclusive to this book, which even includes extensive interviews as part of the details that were collected, and much much more.
Overall, Star Trek: Designing Starships Vol. 1 is an excellent and well researched book with images, interviews and sketches available no where else. Life long Star Trek fans will definitely enjoy browsing and reading through this as some of the information in it was previously unknown (at least to us). We throughly enjoyed this book, and strongly encourage life-long fans to pick up a copy today.
