Mattel – Jurassic World Amber Collection Dr. Ian Malcolm & Velociraptor Figures Review

Since Mattel debuted their Jurassic World Amber Collection at last years San Diego Comic-Con, these figures have been on the radar for fans and collectors alike, as this is the first-time these characters are offered in 6″ figure scale. Ever since Mattel obtained the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World toy license, their team has been doing an incredible job on this line especially in the in the 3 3/4″ scale and now with the 6″ scale. Last year, Mattel offered a 6″ scale Tyranasaurus Rex, and along with this release, there is a 6″ scale Brachiosaurus in the Legacy collection that fits in well with the 3 3/4″ scale. Both of these have had all positive feedback from fans, and we consider these to be the definitive line of the franchise. The Jurassic World Amber Collection offers established characters from both the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World film series, and Mattel is kicking off the line to where it all began, the first Jurassic Park film. The first wave includes Dr. Ian Malcolm and the Velociraptor from the 1993 Jurassic Park movie. A second wave consisting of Owen Grady and Velociraptor Blue that is based on Jurassic World, which will be available in early 2020.

Thank you to Mattel for providing their Jurassic World Amber Collection Dr. Ian Malcolm & Velociraptor Figures for review.

Availability: October 2019

Both Dr. Ian Malcolm and the Velociraptor are packaged in window boxes, with nicely done artwork on the front, sides, and a brief descriptions of the characfters on the back. The figures are protected in plastic trays as well as their accessories.

Dr. Ian Malcolm features the likeness of Actor Jeff Goldblum, and he is sculpted and painted as he looked in the first Jurassic Park film, which fans remember him best in this outfit. He is sculpted in his button down black shirt with a pocket on the left side, black belt with a silver belt buckle, black jeans, black dress shoes with a metallic silver ring on the sides, a stainless steel silver analog watch, a silver necklace with a turquoise beed at the center, and styling black square shape retro sunglasses. His head sculpt features a great likeness and aside from the glasses, he is given his black hair and nicely done facial details that match like likeness exceptionally well.

This particular figure is based on several scenes from the film, such as when he saved the children from the Tyranasaurus Rex on the bridge by holding a flare, and the glass he held in the jeep as he was explaining chaos theory with the glass of water. Those are two of the most memorable scenes in the film that the character appeared in, and also when he told John Hammond that “life will find a way,” and his statement was correct and proven when Dr. Alan Grant and the kids found dinosaur eggs in the jungle.

Dr. Ian Malcolm comes with several accessories as seen in the film, such as the flare, glass of water, two sets of interchangeable hands, and a figure base with a Jurassic Park logo for him to stand on.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, ball jointed wrists, ball jointed torso, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and ball jointed ankles.

The Velociraptor is given an amazing figure sculpt and looks as good as how she looked in the film. Just like Mattel’s 4″ scale and other 6″ scale dinosaur figures, the sculpt has a textured skin with ridges in the skin, and is painted in several shades of brown deco, including a wash on the top part of the body, arms, legs and tail. The tail is given black stripes on top that go over half way down. The detail on the claws on the arms and feet are nicely done and are painted in black, and the nails on the inner sides of the feet are on a hinged joint, allowing them to move up and down just like in the film.

Her head sculpt is nicely done and she has a hinged jaw, allowing he mouth to open and close, and inside the mouth you see the tongue, throat and teeth. Her eyes are painted in green with a diamond shape black eyes, and even her nose has sculpted nostrils. Aside from the textured skin, there are also some lumps on the top part of her neck. The head sculpt looks really good and has a great likeness to the film.

Her articulation includes a hinged jaw, ball jointed head, ball jointed neck, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips with limited range of motion, swivel-hinged knees, swivel-hinged ankles, swivel-hinged toes, hinged inner toe nail, ball jointed and bendy tail.

Included with the Velociraptor is a figure base and acrylic stand that plugs into the lower part of her body.

Overall, the Jurassic World Amber Collection figures are amazingly detailed with great film likenesses that fans will love. Both figures came out exceptionally well and these were worth the wait since they were first announced. Jurassic Park and Jurassic World fans should be jumping on this line, especially if you have already purchased the 3 3/4″ figures.
