Mattel – Jurassic World Amber Collection Owen Grady & Velociraptor Blue Figures Review

Mattel is offering the second wave of their Jurassic World Amber Collection that focuses on the new trilogy of films, and includes Owen Grady & Velociraptor Blue. The figures join the already released Dr. Ian Malcolm and the Velociraptor. This years New York ToyFair, Mattel had shown off some new dinosaur figures that will be offered this year, and surprisingly no human characters were shown. There were some reports of Dennis Nedry and the Dilophosaurus joining the line at last years New York Comic-Con, which we have yet to see a prototypes of.

Thank you to Mattel for providing their Jurassic World Amber Collection Owen Grady & Velociraptor Blue Figures for review.

Availability: February 2020

Both Owen Grady and Velociraptor Blue are packaged in window boxes, with nicely done artwork on the front, sides, and a brief descriptions of the characfters on the back. The figures are protected in plastic trays as well as their accessories.

Owen Grady features the likeness of Actor Chris Patt, and he is sculpted and painted as he looked in the Jurassic World film, which fans remember him best in this outfit. He is sculpted in his dark blue shirt, with a brown leather vest over it with painted washes, and the front includes paint metallic silver zippers, and buckles that are nicely done. The vest is made of a soft plastic, and the front also has sculpted pockets and some nicely done textures and definition. He is also in blue jeans, with a lighter wash over them, a brown belt, with a holder for his knife on the back, and brown shoes. He also has a black watch sculpted on his right wrist, but the face is turned towards the back of him rather than facing forward as you would normally wear a watch. The figure comes with two sets of interchangeable hands, a set to hold the knife, and two open hands, with the right hand meant to to put on Blue’s face to give him a command. The head sculpt is nicely done with good facial details, including a five o’clock shadow in brown, brown hair, which is nicely sculpted.

Owen also comes with a figure base with a Jurassic Park logo for him to stand on.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, ball jointed wrists, ball jointed torso, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and ball jointed ankles.

Blue is a repaint from the Velociraptor in the first wave, and is given an amazing figure sculpt and looks as good as how he looked in the film. Just like Mattel’s 4″ scale and other 6″ scale dinosaur figures, the sculpt has a textured skin with ridges in the skin, and is painted in several shades of gray deco, including the blue stripes going down the sides of his head, back and tail.  The detail on the claws on the arms and feet are nicely done and are painted in dark grey, and the nails on the inner sides of the feet are on a hinged joint, allowing them to move up and down just like in the film.

His head sculpt is nicely done and she has a hinged jaw, allowing he mouth to open and close, and inside the mouth you see the tongue, throat and teeth. His eyes are painted in metallic gold with a diamond shape black eyes, and even his nose has sculpted nostrils. Aside from the textured skin, there are also some lumps on the top part of his neck. The head sculpt looks really good and has a great likeness to the film.

His articulation includes a hinged jaw, ball jointed head, ball jointed neck, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips with limited range of motion, swivel-hinged knees, swivel-hinged ankles, swivel-hinged toes, hinged inner toe nail, ball jointed and bendy tail.

Included with the Velociraptor is a figure base and acrylic stand that plugs into the lower part of his body.

Overall, the Jurassic World Amber Collection figures are amazingly detailed with great film likenesses that fans will love. Owen and Blue make great additions to the line, and make sure to pick yourself up a set now. The detail and likeness of these are on the high-end side, and you will be happy with these.
