McFarlane Toys Mortal Kombat 11 – Spawn 7″ Figure Review

McFarlane Toys is bringing Spawn toys back in 2020 in a big way, starting with a new Kickstarter launch happening soon as announced back at New York ToyFair, which you can check out some images of the figure. If that figure does well, McFarlane Toys will then look at updating many of the classic Spawn characters in a similar style, with updated articulation and high-end detail.

This figure is based on his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11, and bringing Spawn into the game is a great way to expand the already character roaster. This game also see’s characters such as The Joker, Terminator T-800, Shang Tsunc, Nightwolf, and Sindel.

Thank you to McFarlane Toys for giving us an advanced look of their upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 – Spawn 7″ Figure.

Availability: March 2020

Spawn is packaged in a widow box with artwork based on the Mortal Kombat game, with an image of the figure on the right side, a logo on the left, and an action shot of the figure on the back.

Spawn is given a much needed upgrade as a modern figure, and he is based on his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11. The figure keeps true to his classic likeness, and the introduction to the character to the Mortal Kombat franchise is a great exposure to a new generation before the new movie comes out. It also hopefully opens the door to more Spawn characters in the game, and personally we would love to see Violator, Clown and several others make an appearance in the game. With the new Kickstarter however, it’s likely those toys will be made if this new figure takes off, and we don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t.

Spawn is recognized best in this outfit, and the dark grey skin tone, and light grey deco and details on his face and chest. The head sculpt includes green eyes that are glaring at you, which look great. The light grey deco also has a airbrush over it giving it some definition. The sculpt includes various muscular tones, sculpted lines throughout the chest, arms, legs and head. He also has some body armor that is painted in a dark red with a wash over it, and the gauntlets on the wrists, bicep band left wrist, and the shin guards on the lower legs and feet are given spikes that are in a metallic silver. There is also a chain wrapped around his waist, and connected to a skull on his lower torso, and another one on his back. His cape is also painted in the same dark red with a wash over it, and is loaded with a sculpted texture with lines, and overlapping details that makes it look like the cape has more than one layer. There is also two skeleton’s in the front of his chest that are connected to the cape, with a chain in-between them.

What sets this figure apart however is all the new articulation given to him. In recent years, McFarlane Toys offered several Spawn figures in the Color Tops line, but those were given limited articulation. This figure however is a beautiful update and fits in perfectly with the industry’s top action figure lines of similar size and style. His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, swivel-hinged hips, double-hinged knees, swivel-hinged ankles, and hinged toes.

Included with Spawn is his sword, that is given some nicely detailed sculpting and deco, including a metallic silver blade with a wash over it, a dark grey center with a sculpted texture, a Spawn face logo with green eyes, metallic silver, and dark grey around it. He also has a red handle with a wash over it, metallic silver rings on the handle, and a black pointy end of it.

Overall, Spawn is an excellent figure and given a great update to match the standards of today’s 6-8″ figures. The attention to detail is remarkable, including the paint applications. The articulation is what made this figure for us, and if ever choose one Spawn figure to buy, it’s going to be this one as well as that Kickstarter launch.
