Bandai Tamashii Nations is offering a new Captain America figure in their S.H. Figuarts line, and is inspired from the 2012 film The Avengers, which introduced these iconic Marvel characters to an entire new generation of fans, movie goers, and an entirely new audience that the comics had not. Captain America joins other Avengers in this new line, including Thor, Iron Man, Loki, and Hulk, with others surely to come.
Thank you to Bluefin for providing their S.H. Figuarts The Avengers Captain America (Avengers Assemble Edition) figure for review.
Availability: June 2021
Captain America is packaged in the standsard S.H. Figuarts window box, with artwork inspired from the film on the front, as well as images of the figure on the sides and back. Captain America is in a plastic tray with all of his accessories for safe keeping, including an instruction sheet behind the cardboard insert behind it.
Captain America is given the previously offered S.H. Figuarts body sculpt that we’ve seen several times now, including most recently that great looking Cap vs. Cap figure from Avengers: Endgame. This version is repainted to look as he appeared in the 2012 The Avengers film, and is given a lighter blue tone, as well as a wash to make this outfit look worn, dirty and damaged in some areas. All of the great sculpting that was previously offered is here, including the lines, and sculpted details. The outfit also includes the silver star on his chest, metallic silver deco in the zipper parts, belt buckle, and other buckles throughout the costume. It is also mostly painted in blue, with red and a light grey on his chest, with light grey and red making up the rest of the colors. The red is mostly on his gloves and boots, which the boots have two different shades of it. He also has a belt with pouches around his waist, which is loose around it, and also not removable.
His head sculpts are nicely done with a really great likeness to Actor Chris Evans, and includes two masked heads, and two unmasked heads, with one of the unmasked heads with a wash that makes it look dirty. The masked heads have the wings on the sides, along with the A on his forehead, just as we’ve seen with the other offerings.
What sets this figure aside, along with the deco, is the amount of accessories given to him, which some of these are unique for this release. This includes 14 hands, making 7 pairs of hand sculpts that you can switch out to your desire. One pair has a peg on the palm that plugs into the acrylic piece for the throwing shield effect.
The shield attaches to his bicep by placing the brown band around it first, and there are two pegs on the side of it that will plug into the holds on the back of the shield. There are even a pair of hands that are gripping onto a band with pegs, that also plugs into the shield on the back. This can be tricky to accomplish, as the distance between the bands needs to be exact to fit the holes on the back of the shield. The instructions also state that paint may rub off on the bicep band that holds up the shield, and likely will rub off if you leave it on too long or if overuse occurs.
The back of the shield also has two removable brown straps, which are not compatible to place any of the hands through, as the gap between it is too narrow.
Also includes are two shields, one that’s standard, and the other with a weathered battle damaged look, with some great paint applications applied to achieve this.
The masked head sculpts are given unique expressions, while the unmasked head sculpts are similar, with the exception that one has dirt on his face, which is a paint wash applied to achieve this. He also has interchangeable neck pieces for each of the heads, and interchangeable collar (a folded mask that hangs on his back when one of the unmasked head pieces are in use).
Overall, Captain America is a great figure with a great likeness to the 2012 film. The new deco, especially all of the interchangeable parts and accessories make this figure something special, especially with next year being the 10th anniversary of the film. Make sure to add this figure, and other 2012 Avengers Assemble figures to your collection now.
