Mattel – Masters of the Universe Origins Buzz-Off, Jitsu, & Sorceress Figures Review

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Origins line starts off strong this year with new figures that fans of the 80’s legendary toy line and new comers will surely want to add to their collection. This new wave includes Buzz-Off, Jitsu, Sorceress and Stratos, and these are starting to hit stores now. These figures are inspired from their 80’s counterparts and given updated articulation and an improvement over what has come before, while keeping all the characters designs and the charm that the brand initially started off with.

Thank you to Mattel for sending along their Masters of the Universe Origins Buzz-Off, Jitsu, & Sorceress Figures Figures for review.

Availability: February 2022

Each figure are packaged on a blister card with retro inspired artwork from the 1980’s, additional artwork on the back, and a look at more figures that are new for 2022. There’s also instructions on how to use them and their accessories.

Buzz-Off is given a modern update while keeping that 80’s retro vibe to it, just like many other Origins figures that we’ve been getting. He is essentially a bee-man with cybernetic wings and this design carries over nicely into Origins. The torso includes the yellow stripes, with sculpted textures on the brown parts, with some newly tooled parts including the arms and legs, which we will see again when Clawful is released, which is up for pre-order now. Other than the chest, he is given a new tooled head, wings and accessories that are unique to him.

The head sculpt is nicely done and includes the bee likeness that we’re used to seeing in the character. Every aspect of this is great, including the eyes, mouth, and the new antenna’s that are longer than the figure from the 80’s. This is so that the helmet can be placed on his head, and there are holes on top that fit through the antenna’s, which can stay securely on. Buzz-Off also includes a mini-comic, a sheet of instructions showing which parts are interchangeable with other figures, and his axe.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, hinged-swivel shoulders, hinge-swivel elbows, hinged-swivel wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, hinged-swivel knees, swivel boots, hinged and rocker ankles.

Fisto needs someone to battle, and who better than Jitsu as he makes his Origins debut in this wave. Jitsu is part of Skeletor’s Evil Warriors, and is given a modern update while keeping that vintage-vibe. Jitsu is given his orange and metallic gold chest armor, metallic gold bracelet, black boots with metallic gold on top, and a vac-metal gold chopping hand that is perfectly done and a key component to the character’s design. Going with vac-metal on the chopping hand was a great choice by Mattel’s design team, and when you have it in-person you will see that this was surely necessary. Jitsu is also the pilot of the Night Stalker, the robotic horse that is a repaint of Stridor, so hoping to see that released soon. Jitsu also includes a mini-comic, a sheet of instructions showing which parts are interchangeable with other figures, and his sword.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, hinged-swivel shoulders, hinge-swivel elbows, hinged-swivel wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, hinged-swivel knees, swivel boots, hinged and rocker ankles.

The Sorceress is essentially a repaint of the Temple of Darkness Sorceress that was released with Castle Grayskull, with the new knees that visually look much better. Sorceress is given a modern update and comes in her white, blue, and orange color scheme, with the back of the wings given a blue and orange deco with a gradient transition, with the front all in orange. The bright colors look stunning on her and really bring out the vibe of the character. The head sculpt is also impressive, with those great facial details, bird helmet, gold helmet underneath that, and great paint applications. It’s great to have a vintage-inspired Sorceress figure in this line with those new knee joints that came with later releases of Teela and Evil-Lyn, as this particular version of her is what most fans will remember the most.

Sorceress includes a mini-comic, a sheet of instructions showing which parts are interchangeable with other figures, and her staff.

Her articulation includes a ball jointed head, hinged-swivel shoulders, hinge-swivel elbows, hinged-swivel wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, hinged-swivel knees, swivel boots, hinged and rocker ankles.

Overall, these figures fits in perfectly with the Masters of the Universe: Origins line, while paying a homage to the 80’s releases and given a modern update. This is a great line to collect and easier to find as Mattel is making this plentiful available to multiple generations of fans. It’s a highly recommend purchase, so make sure to add this one to your growing collection.
