Playmates Toys was the first company to offer 6″ scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures and are offering some new releases this year. These new offerings include Shredder and Triceraton that are based on the classic cartoon series, and Michelangelo and Leonardo in Disguise figures based on the 1990 film. Shredder made his first debut many years back at New York ToyFair along with a 6″ scale Krang in his android baby body that will hopefully be released at some point, so it’s great we get him in this line now. As you may be aware, both Shredder and Triceraton were released last year as two packs, and yes, there are some tiny differences, and 1990 Michelangelo and Leonardo were also previously released without the clothing.
Thank you to Playmates Toys for sending along their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ninja Elite 6″ Michelangelo & Leonardo in Disguise, Shredder & Triceraton Single Packaged Figures for review.
Availability: March 2023
Each figure is packaged in a window box, with artwork including the property that they are based off of. Shredder and Triceraton have the classic cartoon design, while Leonardo and Michelangelo in disguise have the 1990 movie artwork. Each figure comes in a plastic tray along with their accessories.
Shredder is offered in the 6″ line and makes his debut as a single packaged figure, as he was originally offered last year as a 2-pack along with Donatello, now is your chance to own just him. Shredder is basically a repack, and comes in his light grey armor, including shin guards with spikes, forearm guards with spikes, shoulder pads with spikes, black pants, belt and shoes. The cape is purple and made of plastic, and he comes with his light grey helmet and mask, with the mask being a metallic silver.
Shredder is pretty close to his animated appearance likeness, and they have nailed the colors while the sculpt looks a bit stylized. There are also some minor differences between these two releases, including slightly better paint applications on the eye balls, and the cape appears to be a darker shade of purple, but these changes are minimal and it may vary from figure to figure.
Included with Shredder is a katana, Kama, and 2 knives.
His articulation a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, hinged shoulder pads, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and hinged ankles.
Triceraton is also based on the cartoon series, and this alien dinosaur comes in light grey armor, dark grey straps, dark grey belt, teal pants, light grey ankle guards, light grey wrist guards with spikes, and a light grey bracelet on his tail. His head sculpt includes horns, a blue beak blue eye brows, and a likeness that represents a Triceratops dinosaur. He also has three red triangles that’s the Triceraton logo, including on his chest and belt .
Included are two blasters you can place into his hands.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged ankles and a hinged tail.
Leonardo and Michelangelo in disguise come in their fabric coats, and are given the same sculpts as we’ve previously seen in this line. The coat is made of fabric, with buttons, a belt and stitches. It also covers their backs, so you can’t use the holsters for the sheaths or nunchucks unless you take the coats off. The hat is flocked, and fits on their heads but is prone to falling off.
Each turtle includes their iconic accessories. Leonardo gets a sheath for the two katana’s, but you can’t place the sheath on the back unless you take the coat off, and Michelangelo includes two nunchucks with chain links. Leonardo comes with a blue banana and an open grin mouth, and Michelangelo an orange banana with a closed mouth.
As these are the older sculpts, the articulation is the same as we’ve previously seen. This includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed torso, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel wrists, hinged fingers, ball jointed hips, swivel thighs, double hinged knees, hinged ankles and hinged toes.
Overall, this is a great wave from Playmates Toys and surely one that you’ll want to add to your collection. Triceraton is an essential army builder, so make sure to stock up on him. Shredder is a repack, so you don’t need a single packaged figure if you already have the two-pack. The Turtles in Disguise figures have a new coat and hat, so you’ll want to grab these for sure.
