Playmates Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello & Michelangelo Figures Review

Playmates Toys have kicked off their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem figure offerings with a full line-up of figures inspired from the film. This new wave includes the four turtles, Splinter, Bebop, Rocksteady, Leatherhead, and Superfly, which are all available now as part of the 5″ offerings. The new film is a brand new revival of the franchise, and introduces new designs, while keeping a lot of the older elements and characters. The turtles set out into the big apple and become heroes and accepted for who they are, and they meet new friends and enemies alike.

Thank you to Playmates Toys for sending along these turtles figures for review.

Availability: June 2023

Each of the figures come on a blister card, with artwork inspired from the film, including the Mutant Mayhem logo on the front and back, images of the turtles also on the front, and images of the characters in this wave along with a bio.

The turtles are all given all-new sculpts and there is no reuse or tooling here, as each of them are different shapes and sizes, different shades of green and come in their classic bandana colors. Leonardo comes in his blue bandana, wrists, elbow and knee pads, a belt with the first letter on the belt buckle, and metallic painted silver stars and a buckle. A harness is attached that has a sheath for the katana’s on the back. Raphael comes in his red bandana (similar to Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and covers the top half of his head, along with the wrists, elbow and knee pads. He also has a belt with the letter R that’s very small, a brown pouch and a metallic sliver belt buckle. The belt also has holsters for the sais in the front for storage. Donatello comes in his purple bandana, elbow, wrist and knee pads, with a pouch around his waist that looks to hold a non-removable cell phone, the first letter of his name on the belt buckle, and a metallic silver buckle. On the back of the belt is a holster for his bo staff. Michelangelo has the orange bandana, elbow, wrist and knee pads, and a black belt with the first letter of his name, the metallic silver buckle, and a holster on the back for the nunchucks.

Just like their 80’s/90’s counterparts, they each come with a weapons rack that you can cut the accessories out of, as well as their weapons of choice, and a baby turtle that’s cast in the same color green as the adult version. Once the weapons and accessories are removed, the turtles can start using it, and the weapons rack can also hold most of what’s included. Leonardo comes with three daggers that the circle can be placed through his fingers, a small knife, a throwing star, a pizza slice and a broken can of mutagen. Raphael comes with two large blades, two throwing stars, a similar dagger as Leonardo, a pizza slice and a broken can of mutagen, Donatello includes a bladed bo staff, a bo staff with chain links, a throwing star, a pizza slice and a can of mutagen (not broken). Michelangelo comes with a bladed nunchuck, a regular nunchuck, two throwing stars, a pizza slice and a broken can of mutagen.

As you can see here the baby turtles are each a unique shade of green that matches their adult counterpart. These are non-articulated figures.

Their weapons of choice fits nicely into their hands and can each be stored on their belts or chest straps. Michelangelo’s nunchucks are the only one’s that might fall out easily as the clips are cut at the center.

The included weapons racks can store accessories as shown, with the exception of a few such as the pizza slice and can of mutagen.

The turtles also share the same points of articulation even though the sculpts are all different, which includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel wrists, swivel-hinged hips, swivel-hinged knees, and swivel ankles. Leonardo and Donatello can be somewhat challenging to stand up, and what works the best is to widen their legs apart.

Overall, these are great representations to their film likenesses and Playmates Toys design team have done an outstanding job capturing these particular likenesses. These are surely figures you’re going to want to add to your collection! Check out the stores below for where to buy.
