Thank you to Mattel for sending along their SDCC 2023 Exclusive – MEGA Pokémon Magikarp Building Set for review.

Availability: July 2023 – San Diego Comic-Con

Magikarp comes packaged in a box with an opening flap, with images of the construction set on the front, sides, back and top. On the back is a look at Magikarp on the themed motorized base. Inside, are animated images of Magikarp on top, with all of the numbered baggies, instructions, and the envelope with wings and a tail that need to be removed from the sheet.

Magikarp is a fish Pokémon that comes in gold and orange, with fins on the top and bottom, wings and a tail. The set features 1,574 pieces and Magikarp rests on a motorized base, so he can flop around like a fish out of water. The set also includes a nameplate, and there is a rotating knob on the side that activates the gears, so he can move on the base.

The instructions start off with the base, which takes bags 1-14, and Magikarp himself are bags 15-29. The assembly for the base is fairly simple especially if you’ve working with construction sets like this with working gears. As always, make sure to pay extra attention as you go through the steps and check your work to make sure it matches the pictures.

Magikarp himself is fairly a bit more complex, and I found I had to redo the interior build as it didn’t come out right the first time around. Once completed however, you have a great looking Pokémon, and Magikarp has an open mouth, big white eyes, and other character specific details.

Overall, Magikarp is a lot of fun to build and while a few parts can be challenging, it makes the completed assembly that much more satisfying. Make sure to add him to your collection especially if you’ve build other Pokémon sets by MEGA Construx, or additional offerings. This is a great San Diego Comic-Con exclusive that fans will love.
