Hasbro’s second wave of their popular Marvel Legends series is available now and introduces Warlock to the line as a build-a-figure. This new wave includes Cyclops, Colossus, Sunfire, Dazzler, Polaris, Logan, and Shatterstar, with each figure (excluding Logan) including a piece to build Warlock.
The mutant mistress of magnetism, Polaris is also the daughter of Magneto. After a long sojourn in space she rejoined the ranks of X-Factor, fought alongside the X-Men against the Avengers, and now leads Serval Industries’ All New X-Factor.
Availability: March 2017 limited availability; April 2017
Polaris is based on her appearance in modern Marvel Comics. She stands at roughly 6-1/4″ tall and is sculpted slightly smaller than the Scarlet Witch. The sculpt is very similar to Scarlet Witch’s, which upon double checking we would have thought it was the actually the same sculpt or reused parts. However, nothing is reused here, and she is sculpted in a thin lean sculpt.
She is painted in her modern green costume with several shades of green on the top, pants, gauntlets, and cape. Her head sculpt is very nicely detailed and accurate to the character, with a light green wash over the dark, metallic green lips, green eye brows and eyes.
She is also nicely articulated to create some dynamic poses, including a ball jointed neck, ball jointed shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed chest, ball jointed hips with limited range of motion, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel boots, hinged and rocker ankles.
Included with Polaris are reused energy blasts that have been seen now with so many figures it’s hard to keep track at how many times Hasbro has reused this accessory. It’s a nice accessory and works well, but at this point it’ll be nice to see something different for energy blasts.
As this is a wave focused on X-Men, it’s great to see that another X-Factor character into the mix, as Havoc was introduced in the last X-Men wave. The Marvel brand team is doing an incredible job on character selection, and we hope to see more great characters like Polaris, Havoc, and Shatterstar into the mix in future waves. The only tidbit we want to address are the costumes used for Havoc and Polaris. When it comes to Marvel, what we first think of are not how the characters look today, but how they appeared in the 1990’s under Jim Lee’s run. The costumes for Shatterstar, Cyclops, Rogue, and others released in their 90’s appearance are our personal favorites. We want Hasbro to make more characters in their 90’s outfits, including X-Men, X-Force, and X-Factor just like what they’re doing in some cases. Some additional ideas would be Generation X, Age of Apocalypse, and Onslaught.
Overall, Polaris features a great sculpt, and the likeness to the comics is really good.
