NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1/4″ scale Leonardo figure is now available at select stores and online retailers. Leonardo is the third offering in this scale, and follows Donatello and Raphael. The final figure announced at this time is Michelangelo, which is expected in September 2017.
Leonardo captures his likeness from the now classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 movie, and the figure is almost a perfect replica of the Jim Henson design. Besides Raphael, Leonardo is one character that we’ve been most looking forward too in this line since it was originally announced, and NECA is doing a remarkable job right now with the Ninja Turtles license. Not only are the 1/4″ scale line amazing, but the 7″ convention exclusive box sets from this year and last year are just above and beyond what anyone thought they would do with it. Leonardo is a strong role model character as he is the leader of the group, and to capture this likeness and personality, NECA have put some amazing detail and texture into it to make it look as movie accurate as possible.
Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1/4″ Scale Leonardo figure for review.

Leonardo’s head sculpt is where most of the movie likeness comes to life, Every aspect about the facial details look like they came right out of the film, including the eye ball, mouth, skin texture, and of course the bandana, which is made of plastic around the head, and fabric in the back. The head sculpt is one of a few new pieces that differentiates himself from Donatello and Raphael, which used mostly reused parts from each other with some new parts and paint variations. The head sculpt on Leonardo and the others look so real from the film, that it looks like they’re about to start talking.
While the head sculpt uses much of the film likeness, this doesn’t stop the body from looking just as good, detailed, and movie accurate. The shell is similar to Donatello’s, but is 100% newly designed and sculpted compared to Donatello’s and Raphael’s. The designs on the shell are smaller compared to Donatello, and as Raphael’s shell had a lot of battle damage, Leonardo’s doesn’t appear to have that. Sculpted over the shell is the brown belt and straps, and the holster for the double Katana’s. The holster includes a thin rope that is tied around it as well as dark brown bandages. The Katana’s fit nicely inside the holster, which is also non-removable from the shell.
If you already own Donatello, you will be familiar with the pizza slice and TCRI canister that is included. This of course includes the multiple interchangeable hand sculpts. The hand sculpts appear to also be reused from Donatello and Raphael, which includes a hand for different poses and the ability to hold the accessories. The pointing hand that Raphael came with is one of the included hands, and fits in the left wrist.
The paint apps are truly remarkable, and there is just no way this figure could look this good with a superior paint job. The skin tone is painted in several shades of green, with a hint of some yellowish green deco in various places. There are also black spots in various places on the skin, which includes the head, torso, arms, and legs. The chest and shell is also nicely done with with realistic looking deco and detail. The chest part has the belt and straps sculpted over it, and painted in brown with a light wash over it. Every aspect about the figure right up to his toe and fingernails looks great.
With Donatello, Raphael, and now Leonardo released, this leaves only Michelangelo remaining. If you have not yet done so already, make sure to pre-order Michelangelo right now and finish off this collection. If you have not done so already, you need to start collecting this line if you are just as a die-hard Turtles fans as we are. The quality and attention to detail on these is remarkable, and NECA Toys did not disappoint at all.
