NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1/4″ Scale Michelangelo Figure Review

NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1/4″ scale Michelangelo figure is now available at select stores and online retailers. Michelangelo is the fourth offering in this scale, and follows Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo, which also completes the core collection. Also announced is Raphael in disguise that will be the fifth figure in the collection, along with the baby turtles that will be available at some point in the future.

Michelangelo captures his likeness from the now classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 movie, and the figure is almost a perfect replica of the Jim Henson design. Michelangelo’s popularity has skyrocketed from the current animated series, and children know him best as the goof ball, non-intellectual, but also a highly skilled fighter capable of accomplishing tasks that none of his brothers can do. NECA is doing a remarkable job right now with the Ninja Turtles license. Not only are the 1/4″ scale line amazing, but the 7″ convention exclusive box sets from the past two years are just above and beyond what anyone thought they would do with it. Michelangelo is the most entertaining character from the group, as he is the comic relief, goofy guy you just fall in love with, and to capture this likeness and personality, NECA have put some amazing detail and texture into it to make it look as movie accurate as possible.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1/4″ Scale Michelangelo figure for review.

Michelangelo’s head sculpt is where most of the movie likeness comes to life. Every aspect about the facial details look like they came right out of the film, including the eye ball, mouth, skin texture, and of course the orange bandana, which is made of plastic around the head, and fabric in the back. The head sculpt is one of a few new pieces that differentiates himself from Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo, which used mostly reused parts from each other with some new parts and paint variations. The head sculpt on Michelangelo and the others look so realistic from the film, that it looks like they’re about to start talking.

While the head sculpt uses much of the film likeness, this doesn’t stop the body from looking just as good, detailed, and movie accurate. The shell is identical to Leonardo’s with only the lower belt on back. Sculpted over the shell is the brown belt that wraps around the entire waist, and the sais can be stored in the open space on the sides of the waist. As it’s the same shell as Leonardo, the detailed texture and circular designs are so nicely details and sculpted that they look as realistic as the rest of the sculpt.

If you already own the other Turtles, you will be familiar with the pizza slice. This of course includes the multiple interchangeable hand sculpts. The hand sculpts are re-used from Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael, which includes a hand for different poses and the ability to hold the accessories. The hands have different functions, such as two grabbing hands to hold the nunchucks, pizza slice, and the newly added bag of pork rinds that only comes with Michelangelo.

The nunchucks are polygon shaped, so there are eight sides to it, and these are connected by two pieces of black string. Depending on which open hand you use, as there are two choices, the handles can fit in one or two hands, or the handle can be held in each hand, which has the strings showing straight across his body. In addition. to the hands, the nunchucks can be stored on the sides of the belt for storage.

The paint applications are truly remarkable, and there is just no way this figure could look this good with a superior paint job. The skin tone is painted in several shades of green, with a hint of some yellowish green deco in various places.  There are also black spots in various places on the skin, which includes the head, torso, arms, and legs. The chest and shell is also nicely done with with realistic looking deco and detail. The chest has the belt sculpted over it, and painted in brown with a light wash over it. Every aspect about the figure right up to his toes and fingernails looks great.

Now that the brothers are complete, this leave Raphael in disguise remaining. If you have not yet done so already, make sure to pre-order him right now and finish off this collection. If you have not done so already, you need to start collecting this line if you are just as a die-hard Turtles fans as we are. The quality and attention to detail on these is remarkable, and NECA Toys did not disappoint at all.

Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collectors and fans will love these figures, as the design, detail and overall likeness comes straight from the classic 1990 film.
