DC Collectibles – DC Icons The Death Of Superman – Superman & Doomsday Figure 2-Pack Review

One of the last great DC Icons sets from DC Collectibles is their upcoming The Death Of Superman – Superman & Doomsday Figure 2-Pack. This set is based on the classic 1993 storyline published by DC Comics where Superman is killed by Doomsday, an unstoppable new foe – Doomsday. Interestingly enough, both characters end up dying at the end of the story from their wounds they suffered from each other. Doomsday is the only character in the publishers history to have killed the Man of Steel, and DC Collectibles pays tribute to this epic story with this new 2-pack featuring Superman and Doomsday as they appeared in 1993. This set includes a themed concrete base with rocks and Superman’s cape hanging as featured on the comic book cover, Superman and Doomsday action figures.

The DC Icons line will be replaced by DC Essentials, a new line of action figures with bulkier figure sculpts that stand 6.75″ tall. This line is coming Q2, 2018, and the first wave includes most of the core Justice League characters, Nightwing and Deathstroke.

Thank you to DC Collectibles for sending along their DC Icons The Death Of Superman – Superman & Doomsday Figure 2-Pack for a first-look and review.

Availability: November  2017

The DC Icons The Death Of Superman – Superman & Doomsday Figure 2-Pack is scaled to the 6″ line, and is based on the classic 1993 comic book storyline by DC Comics. This set includes a themed concrete base with rocks and rubble, Superman’s cape on a pole that is shredded and hanging on a stick, and two detachable sound effects captions on a acrylic pole. The concrete base and the rocks includes peg holes, and there are pegs included to insert and attach the rocks to the base to keep them from moving around.

The concrete base is packed with realistic details capturing the likeness from the comics, and includes 8 rocks, and 5 pegs and this allows you to customize which rocks you want to use and where to place them on the base. The two detachable sound effects captions are placed on the base using one of the peg holes, and the wooden stick with the cape wrapped around it is removable from the rocks. The base is painted in a dark grey, with a darker grey wash on the sucrose. The surface includes a rough surface with a uneven layers of rocks and cement sculpted to the base. There are also scratches and damage from the battle including a section of it crushed inward.

The cape is torn and is a great presentation from the comics, it is painted in red with the yellow S symbol. The stick that it’s sculpted too is made of plastic, and includes a likeness of a wooden stick with the detail and tooling on it.

Superman stands at 6″ tall and depicts his likeness from the comics with a torn suit with the chest part almost ripped off. The yellow and red logo on the chest, as well as the blue part of the suit is wrapped around his chest and back, and is the only part of the upper suit remaining. This part of the suit is also wrinkled, and shows great detail and paint applications between the torn cape, and the logo on his chest. Superman’s chest is painted with black lines to indicate chest hair, as well as his forearms. The shorts are painted in red, and the belt and belt buckle are yellow and gold. There is one part of the leg that has a torn fabric and shows a bruise with blood. The pants are painted in blue, and the boots are red. The upper left shoulder also has a bruise with blood dripping down it. Included with Superman are two head sculpts – one with open eyes and a shouting mouth, and the other showcasing his death with closed eyes and blood on his cheek and coming down the left side of his lips. The closed eyesore bruised and he has several bruises on his head with paint applications giving it additional detail.

Also included with Superman is a snap-on heat vision that attaches to his head, and a punch-blast effect that attaches to his hand. Superman is fully articulated, and includes a ball jointed neck, ball jointed chest, ab crunch, ball hinged shoulders, swivel thighs, hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and hinged rocker ankles.

Doomsday stands at 7″ tall and depicts his likeness from 1993. The figure includes a bulky muscular sculpt, with grey skin and bones sticking out of his head, chest, shoulders, arms, wrists, and legs. This is one of the bulkier sculpts in the Icons line, and fans for a larger sculpt will definitely enjoy this figure. Doomsday’s head sculpt features a great likeness to the character, with the bone structures on his forehead, cheeks, mouth, eyes and chin. The eye balls are almost hidden in the socket, and are painted with red eye balls with white around them. His hair is painted in dark grey, and has a lighter grey wash over it. The muscular details on the body includes veins on the arms and part of the upper chest. Doomsday is painted with grey shorts with a silver trim on top, and silver bracelets below them. The shorts include torn pieces sticking over the top trim. The boots are painted in a different shade of green, with bones sticking out from underneath themas well as attached to his legs. Unlike Superman, Doomsday shows no signs of any damage to his body from the fight, which only shows you just how strong he is.

Included with Doomsday are two sets of interchangeable wrists – open handed and fisted. The fisted hands can hold a piece of the cape by attaching it to the bones on his wrists. Doomsday has almost the same amount of articulation (minus the rocker ankles) as Superman, and includes a ball jointed neck, ball jointed chest, ab crunch, ball hinged shoulders, swivel thighs, hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and hinged ankles. Doomsday’s shoulders and elbows have limited range of motion as they and the chest are sculpted big. This causes the shoulders and arms to hang outwards away from the sides, and the elbows can only slightly bend.

Overall, this is a most impressive set that pays homage to one of the most remembered comic book storyline’s of our time. Superman, Doomsday, and the base are loaded with great sculpting with the interchangeable parts and accessories, there are a lot of options to customize and display this set as you choose.
