NECA Toys continues to offer great figures in their 1/4″ scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line-up, and the latest release is Raphael in his disguise as seen in the film. This figure comes with movie-accurate fabric trench coat and hat so he can pass through the city and blend in with fellow New Yorkers. Other figures are also coming in the 1/4″ scale line, which includes the Baby Turtles, and Shredder will hopefully be making his debut at a convention down the road such as San Diego Comic-Con later this year, as NECA did not have him on display at this years New York ToyFair. Already released are each of the turtles themselves, and now Raphael gets the first variation of the line that fans will love.

Raphael captures his likeness from the now classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 movie, and the figure is almost a perfect replica of the Jim Henson design. Raphael stands at 16 1/2″ tall and features a reused body sculpt from the previous offering, and brand new accessories that make him stand out from what has come before.
Raphael’s head sculpt is where most of the movie likeness comes to life. Every aspect about the facial details look like they came right out of the film, including the eye ball, mouth, skin texture, and of course the red bandana, which is made of plastic around the head, and fabric that hangs in the back. The head sculpt is one of a few new pieces that differentiates himself from Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo, which used mostly reused parts from each other with some new parts and paint variations. The head sculpt on Raphael and the others look so realistic from the film, that it looks like they’re about to start talking.
While the head sculpt uses much of the film likeness, this doesn’t stop the body from looking just as good, detailed, and movie accurate. As he is mostly covered in a fabric trench coat, a lot of the details on the sculpt, included the shell are covered, and we’re not sure it’s a good idea to try to remove the trench coat and take a look. By now, most of you reading this probably own the previous Raphael figure (at least we hope you do – see links below on where to buy one), but as this figure comes with brand new accessories, lets start talking about that. The trench coat itself is nicely tailored and detailed to fit his body, which includes hand stitches to keep everything fitting perfectly. Real buttons are used on the front, which include eight total, and a belt with a belt buckle below it. The belt also wraps around his back. The trench coat wouldn’t be complete without a hat, and Raphael’s hat is in a dark brown with a light brown strap around the top. The deco has a weathered look, which is a nice touch. On the back, there is a hole for the fabric bandana to hang in the back.
In addition to the hat, Raphael comes with a backpack that resembles the look of leather, but is made of plastic that is painted in a light green with black straps and silver belt buckles. The backpack includes several pockets such as the front and sides, and is sculpted with realistic folds and detail that makes it look real. The long straps fit nicely around his shoulders, and the bag fits perfectly over the shell as the bottom of the bag is sculpted inward so that it doesn’t stick out too much over the shell.
Raphael also includes two additional hand sculpts as previously offered, his signature sais, a baseball bat and a slice of pizza. All of these accessories are nicely detailed and painted to look movie accurate.
This articulation is the same as the previous Raphael figure as both sculpts are the same. His shoulder articulation is limited due to the trench coat, and the arms can only be raised, as opposed to going out to the sides as well.
Overall, Raphael is a great figure with a realistic style, soft goods trench coat, and lots of great detail that fans will love. The figure is different enough than what has come before and we feel that with all the accessories he is worth picking up.
