Availability: San Diego Comic-Con – July 2018

The packaging features a window box showcasing Rey with the Starkiller Base and Kylo Ren as seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This exclusive set goes above and beyond what has been done before, and includes a light-up acyclic backdrop with trees covered in snow, and in the dark, this really stands out. This is activated by pressing a bottom on the bottom left hand side of the side of the box with Rey. In addition, the Starkiller Base can also light-up in the packaging by pressing down on the rock of the base.

The Starkiller Base with Rey is also going to be offered at retailers, such as BigBadToyStore, which is smaller and does not include as many pieces. Like this retailer edition, the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive has the light-up effect on the lava by pressing the small rock on the left, and it doesn’t appear as if the retailer edition includes the mist effect like this one does.

The Starkiller Base measures 13″ long and separates into four pieces, with the main part featuring the light-up lava and mist effects. The other pieces include Rey standing on the platform, a tree bark covered in snow, and small piece covered in footprints. The entire base is loaded with sculpted textures and movie-like detail capturing the epic first battle of Rey and Kylo Ren. Rey is essentially a statue, and cannot be removed off the base, and is sculpted in an action pose as if she is launching towards Kylo Ren with her blue lightsaber (or Anakin’s for that matter) with both her toes pointing into the rock, knees bent, and the lightsaber and arms are off to the side as if she’s ready to swing. The detailed likeness is extremely well done on the statue, and especially the paint applications on the head sculpt and clothing.

The base is mostly covered in snow, and even the rocks have snow flakes nicely painted over them to make it look as realistic as possible. Besides the footprints, the base also includes peg holes to insert the pegs that are located on the bottom so that Kylo Ren’s feet can stay securely positioned on the base. However, his feet doesn’t work too well with the pegs, and we found we didn’t need them to position him in an action pose on the base. Other Star Wars figures might be more compatible with these pegs, so you might want to try that.

The lava itself has an acrylic piece over the detail and lights up to create a glowing yellow and orange appearance, with rocks inside the lava. This stays cool, and there are multiple options to have the lava light up for 20 minutes, or until the batteries die out. The mist also stays cool, and we also noticed that water drips from the base if the mist continues to pour out, which is something that wasn’t specified on the instruction sheet.

Kylo Ren is no stranger to Comic-Con exclusives, as he’s already had a few figures being offered over the years. This new release however is an excellent update with some battle damage and a scarred head sculpt. The lower portion of his black cloak has some snow flakes around the legs. The cloak also includes blaster holes, and his right shoulder is bleeding with damage. His head sculpt really stands out with the nicely detailed scar that’s painted in red. The figure itself is an articulated 6″ figure as previously seen, which looks great as you can pose him around the Starkiller Base. While Rey has no articulation, Kylo Ren more than makes up for that especially with the many different poses and places to place him on the base.

This box set is exclusive to San Diego Comic-Con and HasbroToyShop in August. We would like to thank Hasbro once again for providing this set for review.

Overall, the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Exclusive Star Wars The Black Series Starkiller Base & Kylo Ren Figure look great, and fit in nicely with the rest of the line. We love the light-up functions including the back of the packaging, lava part of the base, and even the mist effect that this includes. Fans of the line will surely want to add this masterpiece to their collection.
