NECA Toys – Steven King’s IT Pennywise 1990 Figure Review

Steven King’s IT was been haunting horror goers dreams for years with that terrifying clown that consumes the inhabitants of Derry. With last years film that brought fans an even more terrifying version of this character, Pennywise has once again made his way into the hearts of millions of fans, and this version is based on the 1990 television series that Tim Curry portrayed. That mini-series aired 28 years ago, and now fans are treated to a special figure using today’s highly detailed style and likeness.

While most of the attention lately has been given to the new take on Pennywise in his Victorian style clothing and terrifying looking face, NECA went back to the original version that has the appearance more of a clown with those bright multi-colors, facial paint and red hair. This version is an unforgettable classic, and both versions are also frightening in their own way.

NECA is thrilled to present one of our most frequently requested action figures of all time! From the revered 1990 horror mini-series Stephen King’s IT, Pennywise the killer clown takes action figure form.

Based on Tim Curry’s portrayal of the terrifying clown, this 7” scale figure is faithful to his on-screen appearance and packed with detail and accessories. Pennywise is fully articulated and features a total of four interchangeable heads, plus alternate monster hands, noisemaker, bunch of balloons and paper boat. Comes in collector-friendly deluxe window box packaging with opening flap.

The packaging for Pennywise is a blister box with an opening flap revealing the figure and all of the accessories included. The artwork is mostly a white box with the word IT on the cover and sides, with images of the figure on the back, and the inside flap. On this particular sample, the noses of Pennywise rubbed on the plastic bubble, which allowed some paint to rub off as the heads weren’t pushed in far enough to keep the nose away from the plastic. That is unfortunate as this is such a fantastic figure, and we’re unsure if this is a widespread issue (most likely not).

Pennywise the dancing clown features a fantastic figure sculpt, and has a realistic likeness to him from the television mini-series in terms of tooling and deco. This version of Pennywise appears as a birthday clown as opposed to the new 2017 version that has a Victorian style and design to him, and this figures costume design and colors looks less frightening as a comparison to the 2017 version, but as all clowns are scary in all shapes and sizes, this one surely stands out in his own way. The figure has some great articulation, especially in the torso, and the elbows are double-jointed, which helps the sleeves move around, as well as adding some joint strength to help the balloons to float. NECA’s ability to capture the likenesses such as this continues to impress the community, and while keeping these and the Ultimate edition figures at a $24.99 price point, is truly mind boggling.

Pennywise has a big bulky figure sculpt that features bright colors including purple and blue striped sleeves that are baggy, yellow overalls over his chest and legs, big fluffy red buttons going down his chest that are made of hard plastic with a sculpted texture, a multi-color vest that is highly detailed in terms of deco, and a piece around his neck that is painted in white, purple and blue.

The four head sculpts each have their own unique facial expressions and slightly different hair depending on the head. Each of the heads are painted in white deco on the face, with a red nose, yellow eyes, and various other features as shown. The open mouth heads have nicely detailed sculpting and painting that resemble an actual mouth, and the teeth all look sharp and just terrifying. These expressions include a frowny face, a happy face, a scary face, and a scarred face. Each one is required to create the many dynamic poses, expressions and progresses as seen in the mini-series. The only thing we found was that it was somewhat difficult to swap out the heads, they come off, but don’t want to pop right back on without the use of a hair dryer to soften things up.

The balloons are absolutely perfect, and he comes with seven balloons (2 yellow, red, blue, orange and green) that are attached to a wire string so they look like they’re floating. All of these are held in one of the included hand sculpts. For this figure, we found it best to use one of the wires and tie it around the other strings to create a handle for him to hold, otherwise the strings and balloons will fall out of his hand. The balloons can also be used individually, but we don’t believe that this version of Pennywise used one balloon at a time like the 2017 version did, so why not use them all?

The demon hands are also an essential part of this release, which are painted in green with black fingernails as seen in the series. The demon hands can hold the S.S. Georgie sail boat, which is made of paper. The noisemaker is also included, and can fit in one hand with a narrow hole inside the fist. Additional hand sculpts are also included, including a pointy finger hand, two open hands, a gripping hand, and of course the demon hands.

Overall, Pennywise is a fantastic figure that horror goers will love. He sits so great on a shelf with the 2017 Pennywise figure, and both are deserving of adding to your collection, whether you’re afraid of clowns or not, you will love this figure.
