NECA Toys San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 With Diorama Exclusive Box Set Part 2 Review

During San Diego Comic-Con, NECA Toys offered an incredible Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 7″ figure box set that is inspired by the film, and this offering came with an exclusive building diorama that was only available at this years show. The building diorama came as a limited edition to 2,000 pieces. This set includes Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michael and they stand at 6 1/2″ tall. Each figure will come with their iconic accessories, and the packaging of the figures are inspired by the original VHS release box.

Just this week, NECA Toys revealed that these figures will be coming to GameStop, and these are packaging separately and are coming in February 2019. These versions will only be offered in the U.S. and Australia.

This is part 2 of a 2 part review showcasing this years Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exclusive, and part 1 focused on the figures themselves (reviewed HERE).

The building diorama is packaged in a box with beautiful artwork showcasing the building and the 1990 Movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures that come separately. The artwork features images used for the VHS release of this movie, and inside the box the building comes unassembled, requiring you to use some patience while putting it together.

The building diorama stands at 28″ with the cardboard backdrop attached, or 19″ without it. It also measures roughly 12 1/2″ width by 25″ in length, and this allows you to place figures on the front of the building on three different levels, as well as inside the building. The building diorama comes with detailed instructions with step-by-step details on how to assemble this, as well a parts list. The assembly process is pretty much straight forward, with some tricky parts such as placing the clear acrylic windows inside and placing the cardboard backdrop on the back, as the plugs pop right out and don’t really support it.

The building has three levels – first level, second level, and third level, and the figures can be placed not he dark gray sidewalk and roofs of the building. The sidewalk and roofs come loaded with sculpted detail and a rough texture that makes it look realistic, as well as the detail and paint applications on the bricks. The building has an image of the Foot Clan logo on the left side (facing you) painted in a bight pink, a WTRL 3 – Channel 3 news logo painted in white, and a “I love NY” logo on top of a vent. The building is best used for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but is also compatible with every 6-8″ figure that NECA Toys and other companies offer, and we also found it compatible with Playmates Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures.

There are three windows on each of the floor and second levels, a doorway that is locked, pipes on both levels, a vent and a New York City backdrop on top. the cardboard backdrop has the image of NYC on top, and the rest of it is left white and covers the entire back of the building, including the inside of it that is nothing but open space. To store figures inside, you would need to remove the backdrop. The backdrop is prone to falling down as the pegs that hold it up don’t stay connected to the backdrop support pieces, which is a bit of a disappointment, but if you are careful and lucky, you will be able to get it to work as long as you don’t start moving the building.

Exactly how many figures can be placed on the front (and inside) the building varies and its up to you. We estimate that several dozen figures can be stored on the front, and more inside. The sidewalk and rooftop don’t have pegs to connect the feet too, which isn’t really necessary anyway.

Overall, the building diorama is an excellent offering and one of the very best exclusives that NECA Toys has ever offered. While there are logo’s and elements for TMNT, it’s not at all limited to just that, and can be used for any and every other toy line. NECA fans will surely want to pick this up if you can. The downside here is that it’s limited to 2,000 pieces, leaving most fans without an opportunity to own this.
