Thank you to LEGO for providing their 70836 Battle-Ready Batman and MetalBeard Set for review.

Availability: January 2019

The LEGO Battle-Ready Batman and MetalBeard Set includes 168 pieces and includes minifigures of Batman, Star and Maddox, along with MetalBeard in his crab mech. This is one of the smaller sets offered in this new line-up by LEGO, and is inspired by one or more scenes in the upcoming film.

Batman gets a new throne in this set, which measures 5″ high, 3″ wide and 1″ deep. This set features a seat, an adjustable ‘You’re Welcome’ sign by turning the wheel, a ladder so he can climb up it, batwings on both sides, and the back has an alcove with batarangs stored on both sides. The throne also stores two swords on top behind where Batman sits, and the ladder can also be lowered and lifted.

Batman is in his black and grey batsuit, with a yellow utility belt, and printed labels on his chest, legs and back. He is also given new armor that fits over his body, and includes a red bat symbol. The head has two facial expressions on either side, and you will need to swivel the head around after removing the mask, which has been offered before. What sets this mini-figure apart is the new printed labels, armor, and torn cloth cape aside from other Batman mini-figures that you may already own.

Maddox is a new character and minifigure offered in the movie and exclusive to this set. The figure includes printed labels on his chest and back, that includes a chest harness and belt, different colored legs that are brown and grey, with a printed label on the front, a shoulder guard on the left side, and a red beard. Included with him is a spear.

The set also comes with a minifigure of a star with a face printed on, and is made up of two pieces. The star is unable to stand by itself, and is yellow with black, white and orange on his face.

One of the most detailed offerings in this set is the Pirate MetalBeard with his Crab Mech. LEGO fans will recall that the LEGO Pirates collection offered in 1989 through the early 1990’s was one of the most memorable themes of all time. MetalBeard is a new character introduced in the first LEGO Movie, and this set and design pays homage to the classic LEGO Pirates. The design of MetalBeard is a head with a pirate hat, feather, and a metal beard under his head, and the character has been given several different bodies throughout both films. This crab mech is new for him, and measures 6″ high, 4″ long and 4″ wide. The mech features an opening treasure chest with MetalBeard’s internal organ elements, flip-down crow’s nest with a flag and room for a minifigure, and posable legs. The legs are comprised of three swords, and a wooden leg that hold the set up. The crab mech also has two hooks underneath for hands, a sword and a chainsaw next to the legs.

Overall, the Battle-Ready Batman and MetalBeard offers a great selection of mini-figures and nicely detailed sets. The crab mech and Batman’s throne are the two selling points here, and both offer a great appearance and excellent play value. LEGO Movie fans will surely want to pick this set up, which is available now at the stores listed below:
