NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2-Packs Figures Review

The NECA Toys booth at New York ToyFair was one of the most memorable years for them for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the announcement of the 2-packs figures currently shipping to Target Stores. These figures are the same as the San Diego Comic-Con releases and are priced at $50 each. These figures are inspired by the classic animated series of the late 1980’s and 1990’s, and come in show-accurate colors, detail and accessories. The two packs include Donatello Vs Krang, Michelangelo Vs Foot Soldier, Leonardo Vs Shredder and Raphael Vs Foot Soldier. These figures are also offered again in different packaging from the previously offered San Diego Comic-Con 2017 box set.

Also shown at New York ToyFair were Rocksteady and Bebop, otherwise known as the gruesome twosome in the animated series, and if the currently offerings do well enough, hopefully Rocksteady and Bebop will also be offered in this line and most likely as a 2-pack. As far as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures of Leatherhead, Slash, and the Rock Soldiers from Dimensions X – Traag and Granitor that were shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, NECA did not provide any new updates on those at this time.

For those of you looking for these 2-packs currently shipping to Target, it may be helpful to know that there should be plenty to go around at least in the near future, and to help you obtain these we photographed the bar code. You may also want to talk to customer service as well as someone in the toy department. Keep in mind that NECA does their own store merchandising, so you may want to call around before taking the time to go to each store.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2-Packs Figures for review.

Availability: February 2019 – Exclusively available at Target Stores

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box set are inspired by the classic animated series of the 1980’s and 1990’s, and includes eight iconic characters that fans of the franchise know and love. This includes Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo, Shredder, Krang with Bubble Walker, and two Foot Soldiers. The figures are offered as 2-packs, which includes Leonardo vs. Shredder, Donatello vs. Krang, Michelangelo vs. Foot Soldier, and Raphael vs. Foot Soldier. The figures each includes accessories that were also included in the San Diego Comic-Con 2017 box set, with the exception that the pizza box with pizza slices are not included in these 2-packs.

The figures are sculpted to resemble their appearance in the animated series, and the figure sculpts and deco are also the same as the San Diego Comic-Con 2017 release. We actually didn’t find any differences in deco, and the only major differences we found was the packaging, and the pizza box and pizza slices not being included.

The quality of each figure is on the high-end, and well as the high-end paint applications to match their animated appearance. The Turtles are all painted in dark green, and include their iconic bandana’s and the the belt buckles with the letter of their names. The paint applications on the skin as well as the more natural looking gradations in the color work well. Each turtle is able to store their weapons inside their sheaths, with Leonardo and Donatello’s located on back, and Raphael’s and Mikey’s on the front. The Turtles detail is highlighted with black deco throughout the sculpt that gives is definition, and you will also see this detail on Shredder, Krang, and the Foot Soldiers.

Krang comes with his bubble walker, and is offered in 6″ scale. The bubble walker appears just as it did on the animated series, with Krang’s head able to fit inside, and his arms detach from the body, and attach to the walker itself. Shredder and the Foot Soldiers are retooled from the SDCC Mirage based box set. Obviously, the head sculpts are brand new, and Shredder includes a soft-goods cape over a plastic one, and it really looks good. Shredder and the Foot Soldier’s parts were swapped with cartoon accurate sculpts, and the mix of both reused and new tooling makes it hard to even tell that anything in this set was reused. That is just how good and well thought out the process of creating these went. Shredder’s armor includes bendable spikes to go along with safety standards, and The Foot Soldiers also look like they did on the animated series. Those head sculpts are spot on, and they even include the Foot logo on the top of the forehead. The articulation on all of these figures is excellent and Shredder and the Foot Soldiers include double jointed knees and articulated toes.

Each figure in the set includes their own iconic accessories as seen in the series, including the turtles iconic weapons, Turtle comms (both closed and open), a pizza slice, a grappling hook and interchangeable hands for the Turtles. The villains include the Bubble Walker for Krang, a can of mutagen, a pistol for Krang,  two blasters for the Foot Soldiers, a sword and communicator for Shredder, and interchangeable hand sculpts included with each figure.

Overall, this is an excellent set and there is a great homage feeling especially with the packaging. This set is now our new personal favorite as it features tooling and deco that is animated inspired, which is something that many fans prefer. NECA Toys continues to offer incredible toys at great value and this set is no exception. Fans of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series will love these 2-packs.

We are so thrilled that Randy Falk and the fine folks at NECA got these figures on store shelves so that many more fans can have the opportunity to own these. Go check your local store now, as these are currently being spotted.
