Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie Foot Soldier 1/4″ Scale Figure for review.
Availability: March 2019
The Foot Soldier is packaged in a window box with artwork from the film on the front, images of the figure on the side, and images of the Turtles and images of the Foot Soldier on the back. Also on the back is a description of the film as well as the figure.
In the film, the Foot Solider were an army of teenagers and young men and woman recruited by Hun and Shredder to serve the Foot Clan, whereas in the cartoon at the time they were exploded robots that were build inside the Technodrome. These people were recruited to give them a sense of belonging and a family, as Hun and Shredder were calling it, and they were ordered to go out and steal and take part in criminal activities for Shredder.
The Foot Soldier is based on the live-action 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and stands at roughly 17-1/2″ tall and is sculpted in his black ninja outfit as seen in the film. The figure comes with a sculpted textures that completely covers most of the body, including the torso, arms, legs and feet, which the torso, arms and legs share the same textures, and other parts such as the forearms with the forearm guards/armor, belt, and feet having different types of textures. The figure is mostly cast in black, with the base of the sculpt having a blue wash over it that shows up in the chest and area. The forearm guards also have a silver wash over it that’s nicely done and gives it a nice metal look. Around his waist is a cloth belt that can can store accessories such as the sai and nunchucks.
His head sculpt is nicely done and has a great likeness to the film. The mask is mostly smooth with some folds as part of the sculpt, and has the red bandana sculpted across his forehead with the logo, and fabric pieces going down his back. The eyes look like bee hives as they did in the film, and this gives them a sculpted texture, along with a silver wash over them. The mouth is also covered, but on the mask are holes with a silver wash around them so he can breath.
The Foot Soldier is nothing without an assortment of accessories that he needs to fight the Turtles, and includes an axe, a sword, nightstick, sai, and two different nunchucks. The sword and axe can fit into two hands that gives him a realistic and dynamic poses, and the axe has a black wash on the blades that gives it a realistic look. There are two types of nunchucks, one with a chain link with a pattern on the handles, and one with rope and smooth handles, and these accessories can be stored on his belt. The nightstick is cast in black and works great with his forearm and allows some dynamic poses. There is only one sai, which is mostly silver with the large portion of the handle cast in black. This sai is also different than Raphael’s and not a reuse.
He also has six interchangeable hand sculpts, which includes two fisted, and four open hands that can hold the accessories. There are two types of gripes on these, which are a wider grip and a more narrower grip for the smaller accessories.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double jointed elbows, swivel wrists, waist rotation, ball jointed hips, double jointed knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Overall, The Foot Soldier is an excellent figure with a great realistic sculpt to the movie. The attention to detail on the sculpt is remarkable as always, and NECA has nailed it with that beautiful head sculpt. The accessories are all nicely done and works great with the figure. Make sure to pick this figure up now, and if you’re a core fan, you might want to pick up multiples as there are enough accessories here to create many different poses and ways to display him, that one will simply not be enough. Should NECA ever offer a 7″ figure scale of him, he would need to look exactly like this with all of the accessories as the 1/4″ scale, and he would need to come as a 2-pack as you can’t have just one Foot Soldier in a package.
