NECA Toys SDCC 2019 Exclusive – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie “The Capture Of Splinter” Box Set Figures Review

NECA Toys have once again offered a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box set as one of their San Diego Comic-Con 2019 exclusives, which continues the 1990 movie box sets based on “The Capture Of Splinter” as seen in the film. This set introduces first-ever figures offered in the 7″ scale line including Shredder, Splinter, and 2x Foot Soldiers to join the four Turtles figures.

The popularity of these 7″ scale box set figures continues to climb each year, and this set was so hard to get at the show that it sold out roughly before 10am each day for those attending, and quickly sold out on the days of the pre-sales. The good news here is that NECA is expanding this line beginning this Fall with additional sets as Target Exclusives, as well as a Turtles in Time Box Set coming in November. The Target exclusives will have Series 2, which includes a Bebop and Rocksteady 2-pack coming out this Fall, and Series 3 and 4 in 2020 that will see characters such as Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Foot Soldiers, Turtles, and others all based on the 80’s and 90’s animated series. NECA Toys will also be offering New York Comic-Con 2019 exclusives, which will likely include another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box set, and we expect to have more details on that closer to the show in October.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their SDCC 2019 Exclusive – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie “The Capture Of Splinter” Box Set for review.

After wading in a puddle of radioactive waste, four ordinary reptiles become more than just turtles, and are raised by the similarly transformed rat Splinter to become New York City’s greatest crime-fighting quartet. Their biggest enemy—and Splinter’s nemesis—is The Shredder, ruthless leader of the Foot Clan, a criminal organization that’s terrorizing the city. Yet is only after Splinter is captured by the Foot that the Turtles learn how far back his feud with Shredder goes…

This epic box set recreates the “Capture of Splinter” scene from the 1990 movie in 7” scale, all the way down to the in-box positioning! The set includes Splinter (with cloth robe), Shredder (with cloth cape), and two Foot soldiers, plus plenty of extras: manacles, a cardstock crate, and a weapons rack for storing all the Foot clan accessories.

Availability: San Diego Comic-Con 2019

The San Diego Comic-Con Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie “The Capture Of Splinter” Box Set is packaged in a window box with a slipcover in the front. The slipcover has the resemblance of a Foot Soldier with the black box art with a red belt tied at the center. The slipcover slides right off, and revealed is a window box with all of the figures carefully packaged along with their accessories. On the back is several action shot of the figures along with a brief description. The sides include images of the Splinter and Shredder figures. The bottom of the box also has credits of all the talented people responsible for bringing this set into existence.

In the 1990 film, the Foot Clan captured Splinter and tied him to a chain fence inside their hangout, and this box set recreates this epic scene from the movie that is also one of the most memorable to fans. Each figure is scaled down from the 1/4″ scale offerings, with the exception of Splinter as he is only available as a 7″ scale figure at this time. What also may be worthy to note is that these figures may only be available in this box set and not offered as single figure offerings as the Turtles were.

Splinter comes in a fabric karate outfit with a black belt tied around his waist, with the bottom torn and dirty, and sleeves also given dirty deco. The figure itself is remarkable detailed with sculpted fur, and a great head sculpt with long hairs on his chin. The bracelets on his forearms are connected to the chain that goes along his back, and is not meant to be removed. Most of the body articulation is hidden under the robe, and the figure is meant to be chained to the fence to leg articulation wasn’t given as much love as the other figures. His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders (limited range of motion), double-hinged elbows, swivel wrists, swivel waist (limited range of motion), hinged hips, swivel-hinged knees, swivel-hinged ankles. The tail is bendable with limited movement. Included is a box for Splinter to stand ones seen in the film.

The Foot Soldier is sculpted in his black outfit with sculpted textures that completely covers most of the body, including the torso, arms, legs and feet, which the torso, arms and legs share the same textures, and other parts such as the forearms with the forearm guards/armor, belt, and feet having different types of textures. The figure is mostly cast in black with a blue wash over the chest area that shines when light hits it. The forearm guards are also in black as opposed to silver like the 1/4″ scale version of the figure, with the same great sculpted details. Around his waist is a cloth belt that can can store accessories such as the sai and nunchucks. His head sculpt is nicely done and has a great likeness to the film. The mask is mostly smooth with some folds as part of the sculpt, and has the red bandana sculpted across his forehead with the logo, and fabric pieces going down his back. The eyes look like bee hives as they did in the film, and this gives them a sculpted texture, along with a silver wash over them. The mouth is also covered, but on the mask are holes with a silver wash around them so he can breath. His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double jointed elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, waist rotation, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Included are six interchangeable hand sculpts, which includes two closed fisted, two open fisted hands that can hold the accessories, and two open hands. Also included is a weapons rack, an axe, a sword, nightstick, sais, bo staff, a knife with a holster, staff with pointy ends, and two different nunchucks.

Shredder is sculpted in his red outfit with a silver wash over it that stands out when light hits it, with a black belt around his waist, forearm and knee guards with tiny blades pointing downward and made of a soft rubber. The sculpt has nicely done sculpted textures, which are different textures than the forearm and knee guards. His head sculpt is nicely done and the helmet design is amazingly detailed. The faceplate is removable to reveal his face with scars on the right side, along with a great likeness and nicely done sculpting. Shredder’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double-hinged elbows, swivel wrists, ball jointed waist, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Included with Shredder is a nicely detailed fabric cape that connects around his neck, and the black and silver deco and design look great. Shredder also comes with six hands, three bladed hands for his left hand, and three hands for his right hand. Both hand sculpts are closed fisted, open fisted and open handed. In the gallery, we had a few images of Shredder having bladed hands on both sides just for fun, but yes, we know it’s the wrong hand but he does look great with two bladed wrist hands. Both of the open fisted hands can hold accessories from the Foot Soldier.

The exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles box sets are going to be offered as convention exclusives for the foreseeable future, and with the announcement these are also coming as 2-packs this shows great interest in this line to keep it going for as long as possible.

Overall, there is a lot of to love about this box set and all of NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles offerings. This set is amazing and we are beyond thrilled to have 7″ scale versions of these great characters from such a beloved movie. Good things are coming from NECA and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and we can’t wait for more sets like this. This is definitely a must for every TMNT fan and collector, but you’ll have to go the eBay route at this point to own it.
