NECA Toys Toony Terrors Wave 1 Figures Review

NECA Toys have made their horror iconic releases cute and cartoony with their Toony Terrors offerings that feature these characters in a way you have never seen before. These new animated styles are what you would see in cartoons such as Scooby Doo, which is less frightening in appearance, brighter colors and they even appear not as notorious killers, but as monsters that won’t give you nightmares. The first wave includes Freddy (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Jason (Friday the 13th), Pennywise (IT 1990 miniseries), and Pennywise (IT 2018 movie).

Also confirmed is a second wave that includes Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Pinhead (Hellraiser), Michael Myers (Halloween 2), and a 2-pack of Chucky and Tiffany (Bride of Chucky).

Availability: August 2019

The packaging for each figure is on a blister card with nicely done artwork on the front, that has what appears to be a cinema theme with lights, and the entrance and movie posters of the characters on either side of the figure. The back can be cut out and used as a backdrop for each character, and each one is different. Freddy has a furnace pipes, Jason has spooky trees in a forest setting at night, Pennywise 1990 has bookcases, and Pennywise 2017 has a sewer with a cement wall with running water and a Loser’s Club written in black.

The Toony Terrors are each in their iconic outfits as seen in the films, but with an animated sculpt and deco applied. Freddy Krueger is in his red and green striped sweater, with grey pants, black shoes, a brown hat, and burned flesh. The detail on the flesh is nicely done with sculpted details. The glove includes long claws, that are painted in a dark grey and blue as if light is reflecting off it, and the glove also looks like leather with the dark and light brown deco. His articulation is limited, with a ball jointed head, and swivel shoulders. Freddy includes a figure stand, and he needs this in order to stand due to how his legs are sculpted.

Jason Voorhees is sculpted and painted in his green shirt, a grey undershirt, grey buttons, brown pants and black shoes, with the sleeve of the shirt and right side of the pants torn. The bottom of the shirt and pants also are torn and have a cut-like appearance. The head sculpt is nicely done, with the mask sculpted to his head, and painted in a light grey, red stripes, and black holes painted on to look like holes in the mask. Included with Jason is a machete, which is painted in light grey and blue, which is done to make it look like light is reflecting off of it. His articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel shoulders, swivel wrists, and swivel hips.

Pennywise (1990) is sculpted and painted in his classic clown suit. This includes bright colors including purple and blue striped sleeves that are baggy, yellow overalls over his chest and legs, big fluffy orange buttons going down his chest that are made of hard plastic with a sculpted texture, a black vest with red trim, and a piece around his neck that is painted in white, and purple. His head sculpt is nicely done and includes clown makeup, which is painted in white, red hair, a red nose, black eye lashes and detailed deco around the eyes, and a sculpted mouth that shows his tongue and teeth. Included with Pennywise is a orange balloon on a wire string. The hole in the left hand was too small for it to fit through, so you would need to stretch is out a bit in order to make the balloon fit. His articulation includes a ball jointed neck, swivel shoulders, and swivel wrists.

Pennywise (2017) is sculpted and painted in a old fashioned circus clown outfit that is painted in grey with red trim on the edges of the waist, sleeves and lower legs. There are also red buttons on the shirt and tips of the boots. The clothing is nicely sculpted and detailed with folds and sculpted lines throughout the outfit. The outfit is mostly painted in grey, black shoes, a beige collar, and beige on the sides of the shoes. His head sculpt is nicely done with white deco on the head, orange hair, a red nose, red lips, and more great painted applications. Included with Pennywise is a red balloon, and the SS Georgie. His articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel shoulders, and swivel wrists.

Overall, the Toony Terrors are great figures and have excellent sculpts with a friendly cartoon appearance. Fans of these characters that want something new should definitely look to pick these up.
