NECA Toys newly released Pennywise is the latest addition to the 8″ Clothed line, and this version is based on the 2017 film. Pennywise continues to torment the people of Derry with his tailored high-end looking Victorian clown outfit, and the figure is based on the likeness of Actor Bill Skarsgård, who portrayed Pennywise in this adaption of the Steven King character.
Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their IT 2017 Pennywise 8″ Clothed Figure for review.
Availability: February 2020
Pennywise is packaged in a window box, with artwork inspired from the film, and on the back is an image of the figure holding the red balloon and a description.
Pennywise is given the high-end treatment in the 8″ Clothed line and has a much more authentic likeness compared to the already impressive 7″ scale Ultimate line that NECA has released figures in. This new figure features fabric soft-good clothing with tailored folds in the outfit that overlap on the shirt, arms and legs. The clothing is hand stitched to create these details, and the fabric itself has a texture to it. The outfit also keeps the Victorian style with the puffy shoulders, hips and the white cloth around his neck. The outfit also has three red fluffy balls in the front, and red and metallic silver thread looped around the edges of the belt. The primary color of the outfit is light grey, with some red and metallic silver thread on the belt, wrists, and calves. This thread on the wrists and calves allows the fabric on around the hands and top part of the boots hang loosely around it.
The outfit also is held together by velcro on the front of the shirt, and the back of the belt, and is not meant to be removed. But if you look, you will see the plastic body underneath that is cast in white plastic. The boots have some nicely done sculpted details, and are painted in black, tan and have a sculpted red ball on the tips. His hand sculpts are cast in white plastic, including the one holding the red balloon.
Pennywise comes with two head sculpts, one with a smile, and one that’s ready to head you. Each one has an iconic expression including the changes of the look and position of his eyes. The forehead has the crusty paint deco that almost looks like the paint on his face is about to chip, and the hair is sculpted and painted with a wash over it.
Pennywise comes with a red balloon that can be adjusted by height in his hand, which is something that wasn’t offered with the 1990 version. This allows him to hold the balloon closer to his face, or as high up as you want him to hold it. The balloon has an extra hand designed for holding it, and plugs into his left arm.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso with limited range of motion, ball jointed waist, ball joined hips, swivel thighs, hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Overall, Pennywise is given a great likeness to the film and the quality is truly top notch. The details on the soft-goods, especially the torso, arms and legs are some of the best details we’ve seen in the 8″ Clothed line. The head sculpts features a great likeness and excellent facial details. This is surely one figure you need to own, especially since they captured the likeness in the clothing so well.
