Metalhead is inspired from the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series that ran from 1987 – 1996 and remains to be a fan-favorite series. In the classic cartoon, MetalHead was created by Krang, and the character would be used in other television series and was reprogramed by Donatello to fight for the turtles. In the 2012 series, Metalhead was created by Dontallo and served as the fifth Turtle.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon Wave 3 Metalhead Figure for review.

Availability: August 2020

Metalhead’s packaging is a 5th panel window box with beautifully done artwork, which is a homage to the classic VHS tapes. The packaging is inspired from the animated series, and features great artwork on the cover, logo’s on the sides, and images of the figure along with a description on the back. The opening flap has a figure image of Metalhead, and the figure itself is packaged away securely in a plastic tray along with his accessories.

Metalhead is offered for the first-time based on the animated series in a figure quite like this, and NECA has once again outdone themselves giving fans a great sculpt and outstanding deco. Metalhead’s likeness to the cartoon came out great, especially the attention to detail in the sculpt in capturing such an iconic character from the franchise. Metalhead’s head sculpt features an opening jaw, and his chest flaps open up to insert the chest blaster. The chest flaps are also given nicely concealed hinges on the sides so you can open and attach the chest blaster.

He also comes with some episode specific accessories such as the drill and blaster from “The Making of Metalhead” and the vacuum from “Big Bug Blunder”. These part are interchangeable and can fit on either wrist. The parts swap out easily, including the three sets of interchangeable hands that he comes with.

Metalhead also has a switch on his back that is his on/off button as seen in the series. This switch was a nice surprise and something unexpected, but be careful playing around with it as it’s on the fragile side.

Metalhead is also fully articulated, including a ball jointed head, hinged jaw, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, swivel-hinged hips, swivel-hinged upper knee, hinged lower knee, and swivel-hinged ankles.

He moves pretty well for a bulky figure and everything works pretty smoothly and the belt actually hides the waist swivel pretty well, so you have to play around with it to notice it. The turtle shell doesn’t split like that, but since you can twist him it makes it look more dynamic and that looks great.

The deco on this figure is also excellent, and its given nice crisp lines and no bleeding. The solid colors and plastic work well together, including the solid black lines.

Overall, Metalhead’s sculpting and deco are fantastic and NECA has once again proven themselves some of the best toy makers of our time. Metalhead makes his rightful place in this line and we couldn’t ask for a better figure. Make sure to pre-order now at the NECA Store while you still can, as you surely don’t want to miss out on him.
