NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Loot Crate Exclusive Shredder Figure Review

NECA Toys are currently shipping out their Loot Crate Exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder figure that is based on the Mirage comic books by Kevin Eastman, which is a repaint from the version that was in their New York Comic Con 2016 box set that is shown in the gallery and in the video. Since NECA obtained Loot Crate, this opened the door for more Turtles offerings that are for the adult collectors and core fanbase. NECA Toys has been offering everything from the cartoon, movie, video game and now we get a new comic figure, and this is such an exciting time for the fanbase.

This is the only comic accurate figure planned for this year, as the rest of the Loot Crate offerings will see  cartoon Rocksteady in a bunny suit from the episode “The Turtles and the Hare,” an electrocuted turtle as seen in the video game, and an exclusive Bebop in the bunny suit that is offered if you purchased the other three crates.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Loot Crate Exclusive Shredder Figure for review.

Availability: August 2020 – Loot Crate Exclusive

Shredder is packaged in a window box with black and silver artwork, including an image of him on the side, and images of the figure on the back. The packaging is a homage to the original comic book series.

Shredder is a repaint from the 2016 New York Comic-Con Exclusive Foot Clan Box Set that saw Shredder released with three Foot Ninja’s, which was one of the very first releases from NECA in this new age of Turtles figures (not counting the fact that they did release TMNT comic book figures of the Turtles and April O’Neil years prior to this). Shredder is given an all new paint scheme with blue and black shading as seen in the original comic book panel in the 1980’s by Kevin Eastman. At first, it’s hard to tell that the figure is a repaint given the complexity to the new deco and all of that great new shading, which actually can hide parts of the sculpt. If you already own the New York Comic-Con release of this figure, then you probably know what to expect, as aside from the new deco, the figure’s sculpt still works quite well to capture this likeness. The new deco also includes black shading on the armor parts as well, which are painted in a metallic silver with black deco.

If you happen to own the original comic turtles that NECA did in the late 2000’s, both of these Shredder figures work quite well with the Turtles and April O’Neil figures that were offered, and he almost looks like he was meant to be part of that line, but instead, his release didn’t come until 2016 and then again this year.

Shredder comes with a new assortment of accessories, including a set of interchange hands, a bow, an arrow, and a scythe with a chain. The accessories are loose in his hands and they don’t hold up too well unless you properly find a way to balance them as seen in the images or in the video. His grip hands are the only one’s that can hold the accessories, which simply rest in them as they are too loose and too small for these particular hands. The grip on these hands are way too wide to hold the accessories, and these accessories are thinner than the NYCC offerings, causing these not to be held properly.

All of these accessories are brand new and unique to this particular release, and each one is sculpted and painted extremely well. The box has a string attached, and the bow and arrow are sculpted and painted to look like wood. The arrow also has a blade at the end, which is painted in metallic silver. From a photography point of view, it looks as though the bow and arrow work pretty well with the hands and have a tight grip to it, but in reality the arrow is just resting on his hand and forearm, and is even on the inside, whereas an arrow is supposed to be positioned on the outside away from his body. The string allows him to hold the bow in a firing position and you can create a dynamic pose like this, even with the gripping problems. The scythe includes a blade, a short handle, and a chain that is painted in metallic silver, and light grey with black shading.

Overall, Shredder is an excellent figure and a welcome addition to this new era of Turtles figures. NECA has once again offered something special to the target audience of this line. This is something that will appeal to anyone that read the original Mirage comic books, as well as people that want to collect Turtles figures in general. Right now, finding one of these can be hard and often times expensive, as it’s sold out on Loot Crate, and your only bet is eBay sellers, which a link is provided below.
