Bring on the bad guys in this line, as NECA is offering a two pack that includes Slash and Leatherhead as they appeared in the classic animated series that many of us grew up watching. We’ve seen this line expand greatly this year with characters like Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Metalhead, and many other characters on the horizon. This line is only getting started, and the new figures this year we’ve seen this year are some of the most requested amongst fans.
Leatherhead includes two crawdads, a flamethrower, a chain with closing manacle, a bear trap, a net, a rope., and two extra sets or interchangeable hands. Slash includes two swords, the Animalizer pistol and Laser rifle from “Donatello Trashes Slash” (this is the 150th episode of the series), a half eaten pizza, a regular turtle version of Slash, Slash’s “Binky” which is a palm tree from his original turtle bowl. The accessory count here is astonishing given the fact that Leatherhead is a larger figure, and they really put together something special here.
Wave 4 will see Splinter & Baxter Stockman, Granitor & Traag, Roadkill Rodney & Triceraton-Soldier.
Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon Wave 3 Slash & Leatherhead Figures for review.

Slash and Leatherhead are packaged in the standard window box packaging of the line, with nicely done artwork that’s inspired from the series, including images of the figures on the sides, images of the figures and a bio on the back.
Leatherhead is a repaint with some new parts of the Turtles in Time wave 2 figure, and he continues to be a big, beefy figure that is more of a deluxe size figure like we’ve seen with Bebop and Rocksteady, as well as Metalhead. The sculpt continues to work well for him, and this release is inspired by the cartoon. Leatherhead’s skin tone comes in two shades of green, with the back half brighter, and the front half more of a blueish-green. Leatherhead comes in a red and brown hat, with a light brown hand around it, with the red in the front and brown in the back. The jacket includes ripped off sleeves, and is painted in a brownish orange on the front, and a light brown in the back. The wrist bands are also in the same brownish-orange. Leatherhead includes a new belt that is loose fitting around his waist, and has three places to hold accessories, including the trap, and crawdads claws can fit through the hoops. His pants are a dark blue in the front, and black in the back, and he includes new boots. The crouch area is also light grey in the front, with black in the back. The figure has black lines giving him definition throughout the sculpt, including the clothing, face and hat, and as you can see, they did a great job with it.
Leatherhead is fully articulated, and comes with a ball jointed head, hinged jaw, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed tail, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Leatherhead comes with an astonishing amount of accessories, such as the crawdads that are made of a soft plastic and can fit into his open grip hands.
The trap is another accessory that can be stored on the belt, and you can flatten it on the ground so that a Turtle or another character can stand on it. It’s hinged, and works like a real trap. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t close on the ankle of a Turtle, as their foot is too large.
The flame flower looks to be the weapon from “Night of the Rogues,” and they did a great job capturing the likeness and painting it. The top can be tied around Leatherhead or another character, it’s adjustable, so it can hold a large or smaller character.
This net accessory is just great, as it can drop down on someone, or hold a number of Turtles as shown. It can also be tied at the corners.
The manacle can clamp around the waist of April O’Neil, or be placed around the neck of a turtle. It comes with a chain link that Leatherhead can hold.
Slash includes some shared parts with the Turtles in Time release, and is given some newly tooled parts to match his cartoon likeness. The base of the body is a reuse, as in the shell, and feet. His new parts include the head sculpt, backpack that can be removed, shoulder pads, knee pads, hands, and belt. The gloves knee pads include purple spikes that are made of a soft plastic. Slash is painted in a dark green tone, with a brown chest, dark brown shell with spikes, blue armor, a purple belt with a blue belt buckle, and there is a light grey skull on it with black around the edges and eyes. The back half of his body are painted in a darker green tone on the back. He also has the black deco giving the sculpt definition, and there are some additional details on the skin such as lumps on the head, and the detail on the shoulder pads.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Slash includes his swords, with look like katana’s, and these can be held tightly in his hands, the back of his shell through the strap, and on the sides of his belt.
The pistol almost looks like the gun used that turned Vern into a turtle, and it’s very nicely done with a bit of a sci-fi design to it. The blaster rifle is also from that same episode, and also came out great, especially those double barrels and overall design.
Slash also comes with a pizza slice that is almost hand eaten, with pepperoni and cheese on it. Also included is a palm tree in his bowl before mutation which he called his “Binky,” and a baby Turtle of him. These are very nicely done and a great addition to the set.
Overall, Slash and Leatherhead are excellent figures with great sculpts, deco and superior quality. These are worthy of your collection, and it’s also important to note that we here at ToyHypeUSA have been waiting for a line like this to be done for over 30 years. You can’t beat a show-accurate line, and NECA continues to offer such great looking figures. Make sure to pick up this 2-pack now, and stay tuned for more reviews and coverage.
