NECA Toys King Kong 7″ Scale Figure Review

NECA Toys is offering their King Kong 7″ Scale Figure, which is an original release based on this iconic character. The story starts with introducing a group of explorers discovers Skull Island, where they encounter King Kong lives on Skull Island, along with dinosaurs, a tribe of humans, and many other monsters. Among the explorers, King Kong becomes infatuated with Ann Darrow, and protects her from the dangers of the island. King Kong is captured, and is taken to New York and is part of a live stage theater performance, and displayed like a caged animal at the zoo for the audience’s amazement. King Kong’s strength allows him to escape, grabs Ann, and goes out to the streets of the city. There, he climbs The Empire State Building, where his final battle takes place with planes attacking and shooting at him, he swats at them, and this causes him to fall to his death.

King Kong has also faced Godzilla, both in the 1962 classic King Kong vs Godzilla, and the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong.

Thank to you to NECA Toys for providing their King Kong 7″ Scale Figure for review.

Availability: September 2020

King Kong is packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with beautifully done artwork on the cover, sides, and on the back are images of him along with a description. The opening flap also includes an image of him, and he is packaged in a plastic tray along with several accessories.

King Kong stands at 8″ tall, and features an incredible figure sculpt as we’ve seen from the company, including Godzilla figures and everything else they offer. King Kong is quite impressive, and comes with sculpted fur throughout the figure, and skin textures. The figures includes two interchangeable head sculpts, with the vintage style head looks to be designed to the 1933 King Kong, while the modern head sculpt could very well represent the Skull Island or Peter Jackson versions.

King Kong is offered in dark grey fur, with a brown wash over it and this very nicely done. The inside of his mouth also looks realistic with the great attention to detail in the sculpt and paint applications. Both of the head sculpts have an open mouth, with excellent detail including the eyes, nose and mouths. The heads are ball jointed, allowing him to move it in a realistic way, which works great for the overall look and design of the figure.

The sculpt also includes scratches and some battle damage detail with blood on the scars and on his fur, which is also shown on both of his head sculpts. This is from all the fighting he did on Skull Island with the many dangers of the jungle, and they have done a great job capturing this detail.

He is also fully articulated, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball hinged hips, double hinged knees, and rocker ankles.

King Kong also includes two sets of interchangeable hands, included open and closed fisted hands. With all of the great articulation, interchangeable heads and hands, this allows many great poses to be created including film inspired and using your own imagination.

One aspect you might also want to know about this figure is that he’s taller than most of the Godzilla figures, and these are not perfectly in the same scale. At the sale time, they aren’t meant to be, as this King Kong figure is something that NECA created themselves without basing it on anything.

Overall, King Kong is an excellent figure with great attention to detail, excellent sculpting and deco, and a realistic looking design. You definitely need to pick him up especially if you’v been buying their Godzilla and other monster figures.
