NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie – Splinter & Shredder 2-Pack Figures Review

NECA Toys are reissuing their San Diego Comic-Con and GameStop single packaged figures of Splinter and Shredder in this new 2-pack that is available exclusively at Wal-Mart in the U.S. Splinter includes swap out hands, slippers, a nunchuck, pizza, and a mutagen canister. Shredder includes interchangeable hands, a removable cape, a knife with sheath, and a staff. Splinter comes without the shackles he came with at San Diego Comic-Con, and comes with an assortment of interchangeable hands not previously offered. Shredder is a reissue and comes with the same previously offered accessories.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie – Splinter & Shredder 2-Pack Figures for review.

Availability: November 2020

Splinter and Shredder are packaged in a window box with artwork as previously seen on other figures, with images of the Turtles on the front, images of Splinter and Shredder on the sides, and images of them on the back along with a description. Both are in a plastic tray, securely placed along with their accessories.

Splinter is a reissue of the previously offered GameStop exclusive single packaged figure, and he may have some difficulty standing depending on how you place his bendable tail. the bandages on his ankles and feet have more of a grey, and much less of a wash than the SDCC version, and his hands also have more of a darker wash than the SDCC version. The removable of the shackles and the chains gives him more range of motion in his shoulders and arms, which is a great update and now you can base this figure on the movies and not just one particular scene(s). The pizza slice can rest on his head and is based on the meditation scene from the film. Included with Splinter are four sets of interchangeable hands that are new for this release, a can of mutagen, a pizza slice and a nunchuck.

Shredder is another figure that has a much better likeness with this updated deco he’s been given. The scar on his face has more attention to detail and the washes to a better job to give you a more screen accurate version than the SDCC release had. The red part has less of the glitter deco and his cloth belt is also darker. In addition, his eyes are more detailed and the likeness and the expression on his face is more life-like. The sculpt is the same, including the sculpted textures on his shirt, sculpted textures on the forearms and shin guards, as well as the very fragile blades. The cape is still very hard to put on and off as the clip around his neck is hard to loop the hook through.

Included with Shredder is a staff with pointy ends, a knife and holster, a fabric cape, and three sets of the interchangeable hand sculpts (three with blades for his left hand, and three regular hands for his right hand).

Overall, NECA has done an incredible job on these figures and this set was also given some new hand sculpts for Splinter, which is a great bonus. The attention to detail, superior sculpts and movie accuracy is what makes this line so great, so make sure to do your part and pick these figures up now.
