NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rat King & Vernon 2 Pack Figures Review

NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has expanded with two more iconic characters, including the villainous Rat King, and Vernon, the Channel 6 news reporter. This set is based on the classic ’87 cartoon series, and this is exclusively available at Target. Look for these figures to ship next month. This set is inspired from the Season 4 episode “Were-Rats from Channel 6,” when the Rat King turns Irma and Vernon into humanoid rats using a can of mutagen he found in the sewers.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rat King and Vernon 2 Pack Figures for review.

Availability: January 2021 – Target Exclusive

The Rat King and Vernon are packaged in a window box with cartoon inspired artwork on the front, images of the figures on the sides, and the back features images of the figures along with a brief description. The back also gives you a look at additional figures that are available now.

The Rat King and Vernon are inspired from the classic cartoon series, and have finally joined this line that NECA has been offering for years now. These two iconic characters getting a release into this line was inevitable since Randy Falk stated how the line has exploded, and you can be sure it’s only a matter of time we’ll get Irma and Mr. Thompson of Channel 6 News as well.

The Rat King is one of the most memorable villains in the classic cartoon series, and this interpretation from the show looks incredible. Rat King, like all other characters from the series have their own unique likenesses, and they have done a fantastic job capturing this with this new figure. He comes in a brown shirt, green pants with black stitches sculpted throughout the sculpt, dark brown bandages over the pants, straps around his waist forearms and around his neck. His feet also have grey bandages wrapped around them at the center of the foot. His head sculpt looks fantastic, and has green bandages wrapped around his head, with nicely done facial details, including white sculpted teeth, eyes, eye browns, a nose that is mostly covered from the bandage, and sculpted hair.

Rat King includes three rats, which two can be placed on his body by wrapping their tails around him, and the third rat can be placed on his forearm or on the floor. He also includes a flute to control his rat army, a mutagen canister, a strap with three holders for the soda grenades, which comes as two red, and one blue.

Rat King’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball joined torso, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Vernon is a character that you never see in the turtles line, with the exception of his release in the vintage line. Vernon is long overdue for a new figure, and NECA have done him right. Vernon comes in his pink shirt, blue jeans, white shoes with black lines and laces, and a grey tie, that is made of a soft plastic. He also has a watch on his left wrist, with the head facing forward and cannot be moved to the side. His head sculpt is great, and the facial details, and he includes that big pointy nose, eyes, mouth, and sculpted hair.

Vernon includes interchangeable parts to create the Were-Rat humanoid that Rat King turned him into. His forearms can be removed to create this look, and he comes with an alternate head sculpt with a hinged jaw. The Were-Rat head and hands came out great, and include sculpted fur, sharp looking nails, and nicely done facial details. It’s best to heat up the head and forearms first with a blow dryer before swapping these out, as it would prevent breakage and it goes in a lot easier.

Vernon also includes five interchangeable hands (two open, two open grip, and one pointy finger), and the Channel 6 camera.

Vernon’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, waist rotation, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Overall, Rat King and Vernon are amazingly detailed figures and welcome addition to the classic cartoon series line by NECA Toys. The likenesses, paint applications and sculpts are spot on, and it truly cannot get any better than this! The accessories are also well thought out and make great additions to the figures.
