NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Cartoon Attila & Napoleon Bonafrog Figures Review

NECA Toys have just made action figure history with their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection line, and for the first-time, we have a complete set of the Punk Frogs from the 1987 cartoon. We first saw Rasputin and Genghis, and now Napoleon Bonafrog and Attila join the line and gives you a complete set of the frogs. Interestingly enough, not even Playmates Toys offered the entire team in the vintage line, as we only got Genghis, and Napoleon Bonafrog, despite that line including more than 400 different figures. NECA Toys is giving fans something that we’ve been waiting for since the series aired, a complete team of the Punk Frogs to help the Turtles fight Leatherhead and other villains. This set is inspired from several episodes of the series, including “Invasion of the Punk Frogs,” which they had debut in back in 1988, and “Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter!,” where Napoleon Bonafrog and Genghis Frog  visit the turtles and are captured.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Classic Cartoon Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog figures for review.

Availability: October 2021 – Target Exclusive. International fans fan find this set at Zavvi U.K.

Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog are packaged in a window box, with artwork inspired from the classic cartoon. The sides include the Punk Frogs, and the back includes additional images, a description and other characters that are also available. Both figures are packaged in a plastic tray, along with their accessories for safe keeping. The backdrop is the Florida Swamps as seen in the series.

Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog joins Rasputin and Genghis, and now the Punk Frogs are finally complete and part of this line. These are inspired from the classic ’97 cartoon series and are episode based. Both figures comes with accessories from two episodes that they appeared in. Both Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog share the same sculpts as seen with Rasputin and Genghis, and are repainted in different shades of green, which are darker than Rasputin and Genghis. Each of their outfits are repainted in a reverse order, including the red and yellow shirts with stripes. The shorts are cast in their respective colors so you don’t have to worry about paint scraping off the soft rubber. Napoleon Bonafrog is given a darker green, with an even darker green deco on the back half of his body, while Attila is a lighter green, with a different shade on the back half of his body as well. They also have some black lines throughout their body, giving the sculpts definition.

The only significant difference in the sculpts is that Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog have necklaces that are round, while Rasputin and Genghis had triangles.

The accessories are scene and episode based, creating some key moments from their appearances in the series. This set includes a whip, a morningstar flail, three sets of interchangeable hands per figure, an alternate head for each, two money bags, two pre-mutation frogs, and a scrapbook.

The hands work well for the figures, and both share the same closed grip hands to hold their accessories/weapons of choice. The thumbs up and hang loose are a great offering and can create some fun poses and also work for the laid back and hang around vibes of the Punk Frogs. The closed fisted hands are for Napoleon Bonafrog, and the open grip hands with the fingers sculpted apart work for Attila.

The alternate hands and heads can be swapped out easily, and there is little to no flaking on the hands.

The scrap book is another fun accessory and something that’s a bit more obscure. This is to reminisce the first time the turtles met the Punk Frogs, and NECA even added images of figures as a bonus.

Both figures also come with a pre-transformation frogs figures, and are painted in the same shades of green as their mutated counterparts.

The money bags are from their debut episode, where the Punk Frogs stole loot from a bank for Shredder. These look to be the same loot bags used for Mondo Gecko, and are painted in a light grey, with a green dollar sign, and a brown tie to keep it shut.

Napoleon’s whip is cast in a very soft plastic with a wire inside so you can bend it for possibility and display. The handle of the ship is brown with some black shading, and the whip is in a dark grey. Attila includes the morningstar flail, and the plastic chain works exceptionally well so that the spiked ball can be swung around.

Since they all share the same sculpt, these figures are given the same articulation, including ball jointed heads, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso’s, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Overall, Attila and Napoleon Bonafrog are two outstanding figures with great likenesses and attention to detail, and match the source materials nicely. The sculpts, deco and accessories all came out exceptionally well, and you will surely love these especially if you’ve been collecting the line. I can’t stress this enough, but these are some of the best turtles figures ever made! Especially anything that is show based from the ’87 series or other.
