NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie April O’Neil Figure Review

Judith Hoag makes her action figure debut in NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie line, as she played April O’Neil, the news reporter that became a friend and ally to the Turtles. NECA is offering two versions of this figure, including a variant that is limited to 2,000 pieces that was offered at the NECA Store and comes with a yellow rain coat and press badge.

Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 Movie April O’Neil Figure for review.

Availability: November 2021

April O’Neil is packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with the front a foil cover of April O’Neil and televisions. The sides show images of the figure, and the back shows more images, a description and images of the four Turtles below.

April O’Neil is an essential part of the Turtles franchise and she makes her figure debut in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie line-up, and features the likeness of Actress Judith Hoag. She is sculpted and painted in a dark purple shirt with blue dots, a brown vest with pins on it, a necklace sculpted to the shirt, brown skirt, and red high-heels. There is also a watch sculpted to her left wrist, rings with metallic gold on her fingers and earrings that are hidden under the hair. The vest and skirt are made of a soft plastic, with a bit of texture to it and sculpted wrinkles to make it look more realistic. The attention on the clothing is remarkably done, and matches the source material nicely.

Her head sculpt resembles a great likeness to Judith Hoag, who portrayed April in the film. The facial details and sculpted hair with a wash brings out the best of the figure overall, and can be swapped out easily on the ball joint of the neck.

April includes a purse with a strap that can go around her torso onto her shoulder, and is given a nicely done pattern on both sides. The purse also opens up so she can place the sais inside to defend herself from the Foot Clan.

She also includes a Channel 3 microphone that she can hold, with a long wire attached to it that does not connect to anything.

She also includes a stack of pizza boxes with printed labels on the sides and top, and three sets of interchangeable hand sculpts (2x open, 2x grip, 1x closed fisted, and 1x pointed finger), and a base with a peg on top so can stand.

April O-Neil is also fully articulated, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double-hinged elbows, ball jointed hips, ball jointed torso with no range of motion as the shirt prevents that, ball joined hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles. She requires the small black round base to help her stand, as her ankles don’t properly support the weight of the figure.

Overall, April O’Neil is more than worthy of adding to your collection, and historically this one is going to be remembered for many years to come. We know we are getting a second version of April offered as a 2-pack with Casey Jones based on the scenes from the farm house, but this first release is inspired from multiple scenes from the film and in my opinion will be the most memorable of the collection. This is such a great time to be a turtles fan, so make sure to start checking your local Wal-Mart store for her, as she should be starting to ship anytime now.
