In the classic 1981 film An American Werewolf In London, there’s a classic scene where David Kessler dreams that he and his family are attacked and murdered by mutant-Nazi werewolf’s before his eyes. The werewolf’s are heavily armed and and guns down the family, and one of them uses a knife at his throat and comes from behind him. While they begin to set the house of fire, his throat is slit and wakes up in the hospital bed, only to witness the nurse being murdered by one of The Nightmare Demons and he wakes up from that dream. This is one of the most bloodcurdling scenes in the film and The Nightmare Demons are some of the most memorable from the film even though the scene was brief in the film.
Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their An American Werewolf In London – Ultimate Nightmare Demon Figure for review.
Availability: December 2021
The Nightmare Demons are packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with a foil cover that makes the characters pop right out of the box, images of the characters on the sides, and images on the back along with a description. The opening flap has another image, and the figure is packaged in a plastic tray along with his accessories.
The Nightmare Demons are sculpted and painted in their dark green Nazi uniform, with sculpted folds and pockets on the front, a black belt around his waist and a black strap around his chest both with a metallic silver buckle, dark green pants and black boots. The outfit also has sculpted textures that makes the outfit look and feel more realistic, and black gloves.
The figure is given four head sculpts as there were four of them in the film, each with his own unique likeness and accessories. Each of these head sculpts have wolf-like features, including fangs and metallic gold eyes. The two on top have the most features, with hair covering their entire faces and the fangs are longer as they appear to be further along in the transformation than the other two. The two on the left also have some decaying flesh on their faces that almost makes them look zombified, which is a nice touch. The one that’s bald has this green wash on top of his head, and both on the bottom have pointy ears and realistic facial details as seen in the film.
Each Nightmare Demon has their own unique accessories, including three firearms, two knives (one regular, one bloody), two sets of interchangeable hands, a torch, and of course the additional three extra head sculpts.
The Nightmare Demons are also fully articulated, including a ball jointed head and neck, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, waist rotation, ball hinged hips, swivel thighs, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
If you haven’t noticed from the pictures, which was specified in detail in the video, is that the head (third from left) is missing the neck piece that plugs into the body. Someone at the factory wasn’t paying attention to this detail, and this Nightmare Demon lost his neck! I reach out to NECA to inquire about this, and hoping that they come through. In the video, I also specified that I ordered three more of these earlier last year, but that pre-order has not come in yet as the figure was delayed likely due to Covid-19, as I wanted to showcase all these heads on the body in the video and photogallery. But since it’s taking forever for that order to come in, I went ahead with the review.
Overall, the Nightmare Demons are a phenomenal figure and a great likeness, great attention to detail and accessories. The head sculpts look just as impressive as they did in the film, and each unique likeness has been captured so perfectly here. NECA collectors will surely want to add him to their collections. You are going to want to buy 4 of this figure to showcase him in each head.
